Lead TMS Development Engineer
Job Description
Work onsite in Davidson, NC with a role focused on thermal management systems for the data center and semiconductor ecosystem. You will lead technical development activities that span design, analysis, controls, validation, and customer-facing technical engagement, leveraging subject matter expertise while partnering closely with peers and product teams. The compensation range for this salary role is USD 123,722 - 173,004 per year, with incentive eligibility.
Responsibilities
- Provide thermal management system design subject matter expertise for data center and semiconductor applications while maintaining broad HVAC systems and product knowledge.
- Apply deep understanding of equipment operation, limitations, and real-world constraints to system design, analysis, control, and operation.
- Develop thermal management systems using Trane or sourced equipment and controls, including project scoping, concept development, engineering analysis, creation of commercialization content and tools, and system validation.
- Influence and deliver system-level reference design strategy and execution through close collaboration with partners, customers, and peers.
- Evaluate complex, special, and advanced engineering problems independently, with minimal supervision.
- Act as a subject matter expert to improve existing systems and processes.
- Collaborate with and influence product teams to achieve shared objectives.
- Provide periodic routine to intensive technical guidance to less experienced professionals or technicians assigned to work on large projects.
- Analyze system issues using modeling tools and techniques, and collaborate with modeling and simulation specialists to develop new tools where needed.
- Develop and document thermal management system modes, sequence of operations, and other system level control requirements.
- Perform field validation through digital and jobsite fulfillment and analysis activity.
- Support Trane business pursuits with technical participation on strategic job acquisition teams.
- Develop and deliver technical presentations for customers and industry association events.
- Serve on industry association committees such as ASHRAE to develop technical materials, codes, and/or standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university with a strong background in thermal/fluid energy and/or controls.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant engineering work experience.
- Engineering background in data center/high-tech design is required.
- Ability to travel independently both domestically and internationally.
- PLC controls experience is a plus.
- Experience with onsite power generation and/or backup power distribution is a plus.
- Knowledge of HVAC products, components, and systems is desired.
- Strong thermal/fluid energy and/or controls background is a plus.
- Strong technical skills with natural curiosity and enthusiasm to learn and develop new skills.
- Technically creative while grounded in real world feasibility.

- Self-motivated and disciplined; willing and able to transfer knowledge to other groups.

Work Location and Schedule
- Monday to Thursday: work onsite with colleagues.
- Fridays: choose your work location, balancing what your work requires.
- Overnight travel: 5β15% depending on assigned projects; some international travel is possible.
