Overview

The Product Design Engineer position is based in Avoca, IA. This on-site, direct-hire role focuses on converting customer requirements into practical, manufacturable designs while advising on product features, specifications, and execution. You will collaborate with engineering and sales teams to deliver specialized design solutions and support testing and analysis for assigned product lines.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and align customer design requirements with project objectives in partnership with sales teams.
  • Develop detailed drawings, layouts, schematics, and proposals using SolidWorks and AutoCAD or DraftSight.
  • Create designs that match existing manufacturing processes and facilities based on equipment and performance specifications.
  • Handle Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), address corrective actions, and resolve design obstacles.
  • Participate in design reviews with sales, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver custom solutions.
  • Provide on-site engineering assistance, conduct inspections, and support commissioning activities.
  • Interpret and adhere to relevant industry standards and codes such as UL, NEC, and NFPA.
  • Revise existing designs as necessary to enhance product quality and minimize recurring issues.
  • Develop specialized knowledge in assigned product lines over time and assist in testing and analyzing results.

Qualifications

  • BS or Associate degree in Mechanical Design, Electrical Design, or Engineering Technology, with 3–5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD (2018 or newer) and SolidWorks; advanced proficiency in these tools.
  • Comprehensive understanding of mobile electrification systems in industrial and commercial settings.
  • Strong communication skills to articulate technical requirements to internal teams and clients.
  • Knowledge of regulatory codes (UL, NEC, NFPA) and applicable standards.
  • Ability to create detailed technical drawings and layouts and support customer and sales collaboration.
  • Problem-solving skills for developing custom designs and handling ECOs.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based with frequent sitting, computer use, and occasional walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds is required. Close vision is necessary. The work environment is typically quiet, though visits to production or testing areas may require PPE such as safety glasses and steel-toe shoes. While there are no direct supervisory duties, the role provides technical guidance and leadership to designer-level team members.
