Pratt & Whitney is seeking a Senior Engineer P3 to focus on durability environmental effects in support of durability product teams. In this onsite role based in East Hartford, CT, you will help model, validate, and analyze how environmental exposure interacts with engine hardware components, while partnering across disciplines and with HSE Methods.
Within Hot Section Engineering (HSE), the team owns the design, development, technology maturation, and in-service support for a wide range of engine parts and systems, including diffuser cases, combustors, turbines, augmenters, nozzles, and associated fuel systems. You will contribute technical work that supports durability design and improves predictive capability for environmental exposure and fleet impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Durability CIPT product teams with business-critical challenges tied to hardware environmental exposure.
- Collaborate across disciplines and with HSE Methods to define environmental exposure tool set requirements, including inputs and outputs aligned to the Durability Design System vision.
- Help shape a roadmap for future models that predict environmental interactions with engine components.
- Spot gaps in existing environmental exposure predictive tool capabilities and work with data acquisition teams to define test plans that address those gaps.
- Create standard best practices for using and interpreting CFD-based particle tracking models to evaluate hot section components.
- Develop, manage, validate, and calibrate predictive models of environmental exposure interactions with engine components.
- Develop validation plans for environmental effects on engine components and support environmental rig and engine testing.
- Track fleet-level hardware environmental exposure and review environmental impacts on fielded engines.
- Benchmark data and best practices from academia, government, and industry.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
- 5 years of engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3 years of engineering experience with an advanced degree.
Preferred Background
- Background in Aero Thermal Sciences with concentration in heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
- Knowledge of gaspath hardware failure modes and mission life modeling for limiting modes such as oxidation, creep, corrosion, and TMF.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes including investment casting, laser and EDM hole drilling, airflow, and metallic and ceramic coatings.
- Experience with dirt/particulate transport characterization and interaction with turbine hardware.
Technologies
- CFD-based particle tracking models
