Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Metrology Engineer to build, validate, and deploy inspection methods for highly engineered hardware supporting the SPARC project. This onsite role in Devens, MA centers on advanced mechanical inspection, metrology equipment and standards maintenance, and close coordination across Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Design Engineering, Quality, and R&D to support production readiness and resolve issues.
Working Monday through Friday on the 11:00 pm to 7:30 am shift, you will help ensure critical dimensional results are captured accurately and communicated clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. The position offers $80,000 to $130,000 per year (including a 15% shift differential), along with equity and comprehensive benefits.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine advanced mechanical inspection techniques to address complex measurement challenges.
- Qualify and document inspection methods with Quality Engineering, including procedures, work instructions, and evidence of capability.
- Collaborate daily with Quality and Manufacturing Engineering to support production readiness and rapid issue resolution.
- Evaluate and help select new metrology equipment and technologies, including ROI, capability assessment, and implementation planning.
- Maintain metrology equipment and standards; perform 5S and calibration or verification activities as applicable.
- Contribute design-for-inspection input during drawing release, including GD&T definition and development of inspection standards.
- Cross-train as a Quality Technician and perform routine inspections as needed to support throughput.
- Summarize, visualize, and present critical dimensional inspection results to a range of stakeholders.
- Design and procure inspection fixturing and tooling to support accurate, repeatable measurements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience in lieu of a degree.
- 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing, production, or field environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing advanced metrology or inspection techniques.
- Strong communication skills, including presenting technical information to broad audiences.
- Ability to interpret complex mechanical drawings and apply GD&T.
- Working knowledge of standard machining and fabrication processes.
- Experience programming metrology and/or manufacturing equipment.
- CAD design experience.
- CMM programming experience; ZEISS Calypso preferred.
- Experience using portable metrology equipment (e.g., Creaform, laser tracker, CMM arm).
- CAD design experience; Siemens NX preferred.
- Working knowledge of quality systems fundamentals.
- Comfort using Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence) or similar collaboration platforms.

Salary range
- $80,000 - 130,000 per year (includes 15% shift differential).
Must-have requirements
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time.
- Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally.
