Agentic AI Engineer
Job Description
Zelis is hiring an Agentic AI Engineer to design, build, deploy, and transition production-ready agentic AI solutions for complex healthcare financial workflows. This hybrid role in Boston, MA brings together business leaders, engineers, and domain experts to pinpoint high-value AI opportunities and deliver practical systems that support automation, better decisions, improved accuracy, and operational efficiency.
What you’ll do
- Partner with internal business leaders and engineers to identify high-value AI opportunities.
- Translate complex healthcare business challenges into scalable agentic AI solutions.
- Choose the right approach for each problem: apply AI where reasoning and ambiguity call for it, and use deterministic software, rules, and controls where they offer greater reliability.
- Design, build, and deploy production-ready AI agents and applications.
- Create agent workflows, tool integrations, APIs, data pipelines, and orchestration layers.
- Work directly with stakeholders through discovery, implementation, launch, and handoff.
- Improve automation, decision support, accuracy, and operational efficiency across the workflow.
- Identify reusable agentic patterns that strengthen the core platform.
- Handle ambiguous problems where no playbook exists.
- Validate outcomes, establish guardrails, and transition solutions to long-term owning teams.
What we’re looking for
- Approximately 3–5 years building software or AI products in startups, applied AI, innovation, consulting, or similar fast-moving environments.
- Experience delivering production software or AI solutions from prototype through launch.
- Hands-on experience with LLMs, agents, RAG, tool use, APIs, or modern AI frameworks.
- Interest and experience partnering with internal stakeholders or customers to understand complex problems and translate needs into practical solutions.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals in at least one modern programming language.
- Experience deploying cloud-based production systems.
- Ability to evaluate agent behavior, system performance, and appropriate AI guardrails.
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and owning problems from discovery through handoff.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and business stakeholders.
- Curiosity and hands-on experimentation with AI through professional work, open source, personal projects, agents, automations, or other technical exploration.
- A builder mindset, valuing curiosity, experimentation, and ownership.
- A track record that matters most: what you’ve built, including experimentation with AI, agents, and shipped projects.
Technologies you’ll work with
LLMs, agents, RAG, APIs, and modern AI frameworks.
