Camera Machine Learning Engineer

Apple’s Camera Hardware Engineering team is building end-to-end camera hardware experiences, and the Machine Learning Engineer role sits at the intersection of research and production readiness. In this onsite position in Cupertino, CA, you will contribute machine learning to camera tasks spanning image and video processing, computational photography, and scene understanding, while supporting the research, design, development, test, and qualification of Apple camera hardware.

You will be responsible for taking ML from prototype through evaluation, with an emphasis on ongoing benchmarking and design characterization. Your work will also connect with data collection efforts to ensure models can be trained and validated effectively using large-scale image and video datasets.

What you’ll do

• Own end-to-end research, design, development, test, and qualification of camera hardware for Apple products.
• Drive ongoing design evaluation, benchmarking, and characterization of Apple camera products.
• Research, design, and implement machine learning algorithms for camera tasks, including image and video processing, computational photography, and scene understanding.
• Collaborate with data collection teams to curate large-scale image and video datasets, performing data analysis and preprocessing to train and validate ML models.
• Build ML algorithm prototypes and assess performance through rigorous testing and user feedback.
• Use your findings to support continuous improvement of camera hardware and ML-enabled capabilities.

What you bring

• MS or Ph.D. in Machine Learning, EE, CS, Physics, Optics, or equivalent, with 3+ years of experience in machine learning research or relevant industry experience.
• Experience applying deep learning to computer vision tasks such as object recognition, image segmentation, inpainting, and anomaly detection.
• Experience applying generative AI and reinforcement learning techniques to enhance hardware design processes.
• Experience using advanced ML methods to optimize system architectures and improve image quality in the hardware design domain.
• Experience with image quality metrics and evaluation methodology.
• Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3 years experience in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related fields.
• Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Strong foundation in machine learning and computer vision principles, and algorithms.
• Experience with camera and/or image sensor technologies.

Pay & benefits

The base pay range for this role is USD 150,400 - 225,300 per year. Base pay depends on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
