HVAC Mechanical Engineer

GEM Technology is hiring an HVAC Mechanical Engineer to support research, design, fabrication, and installation work tied to HVAC mechanical equipment. This hybrid role is based in Oak Ridge, TN, with on-site presence needed several days each week to cover HVAC replacements and facility renovation scope and cost estimating at ORNL.

This contract position is structured for engineers with strong hands-on HVAC experience, including planning layouts for HVAC components, verifying safe and efficient system performance, and communicating findings professionally as they may need to be shared with the lab director.

Key Responsibilities

• Research, design, fabricate, and install HVAC mechanical equipment in accordance with client requirements.
• Provide consultation on HVAC system and equipment design across a range of project types.
• Survey sites ahead of fitting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
• Plan the placement of pipework, ducts, and control panels.
• Install HVAC components.
• Perform quality checks to confirm systems operate efficiently and safely.
• Prepare detailed scopes and cost estimates for HVAC system and facility renovation projects at ORNL.
• Maintain a professional presence and be prepared to present findings to the lab director.

Required Experience & Education

• 5+ years of experience in HVAC systems and Mechanical Engineering (required).
• Associate’s degree in mechanical engineering or HVAC systems (required).
• Experience with large system HVAC replacements and facility renovations (required).
• Bachelor’s Degree in HVAC Systems or Mechanical Engineering.
• On-site availability for at least a few days each week (required).
• Ability to present findings to the lab director.
• Experience (as specified): HVAC design, Mechanical engineering, Facility renovations, and Mechanical design/drafting (each listed as 5 years required).

Work Arrangement

• Hybrid remote in Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
• On-site presence for at least a few days each week.
• Possibility of some work from home hours.
