Machine Learning Engineer

Apple’s Machine Intelligence Neural Design (MIND) team applies research to build practical machine learning capabilities used by everyday users. In this onsite role in Pittsburgh, PA, you will work across the end-to-end ML lifecycle, from dataset and training pipeline development to runtime inference and on-device optimization.

You will help advance efforts spanning Foundation Models and Perception, shipping ML-based features supported by robust production software and real-time sensing experiences.

What you’ll do

• Build end-to-end ML training and evaluation pipelines to support model development and assessment.
• Develop ML production software that integrates model functionality into Apple’s software infrastructure.
• Create end-to-end demos for ML solutions, demonstrating end-to-end behavior from inputs to model outputs.
• Participate in cross-functional discussions and represent the team in collaborative planning and review.
• Work across the full development pipeline, including dataset approaches, model training, runtime inference integration, and on-device optimizations.
• Collaborate with ML researchers, SW/FW engineers, and Operation/Data engineers to move research and production initiatives forward.
• Contribute pipeline components needed for model development and evaluation.
• Support sensing-related work, including real-time sensing visualizations and model prediction.

Minimum qualifications

• BS or MS + 3-5 years of Machine Learning Software Engineering, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant field.
• Strong foundation in Machine Learning, including classical ML models, DNN, and multimodal Foundation Models.
• Experience building model training and evaluation pipelines in Python and PyTorch.
• Experience prototyping and developing software applications, preferably in Swift.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment.

Requirements

• Proficient programming skills in Python and one deep learning toolkit such as JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
• Experience with on-device ML model deployment and on-device optimization.
• Experience handling multimodal data, including text, images, audio, and other sensors.
• Experience developing production software.
• Proficient in Swift, Objective C, C++, or Go.
• Experience in prototyping and developing software applications, preferably in Swift.

Education

• BS or MS (or PhD) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant field.
