Senior Data Engineer

Harris County Public Health is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain the data foundation that supports reporting and data analysis across the organization. This onsite role in Houston helps ensure reliable data pipelines, collection systems, data models, and a data warehouse, while also providing technical guidance and recommending improvements.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and expand the data warehouse and analytics environment.
• Develop data pipelines, collection systems, and data models to support analysis and reporting needs.
• Research and evaluate opportunities to improve data collection and processing.
• Collaborate with data analytics teams across Harris County Public Health to deliver efficient, relevant datasets.
• Share knowledge to strengthen team-wide expertise.
• Communicate project status, risks, milestones, and role responsibilities to cross-departmental stakeholders.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including special tasks related to responding to an emergency event.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
• 8 (eight) years of experience in database administration.
• 5 (five) years of experience with Stored Procedures, advanced query functions such as Common Table Expressions and pivots, and other advanced RDBMS tasks.
• 5 (five) years of experience with SSIS.
• 3 (three) years of experience practicing agile principles.
• 3 (three) years of experience working with HIPAA protected data.
• Strong SQL skills and database architecture.
• In-depth understanding of IT security and how to handle health protected data.
• Ability to analyze issues, identify root causes, and develop solutions to overcome project challenges.
• Skilled in time management, prioritization, and meeting project deadlines.

Typical Hours and Position Type

• Full-Time | Grant-Funded Position
• Monday – Friday | 8 am – 5 pm
• Hours may vary based on departmental business needs or task requirements.
• May require periodic overnight travel and long hours or overtime during emergencies or disasters.
