Senior Staff AI Engineer - Agentic AI Platform

Capital One is building responsible, reliable AI systems and foundation AI platforms that help improve how associates work and how customers engage with the bank. In this Senior Staff AI Engineering role, you will focus on designing and scaling AI software components, spanning foundation model training, LLM inference, and agentic workflows, alongside model governance and observability.

This position is remote eligible, with the role available in McLean, VA, and includes opportunities to shape technical standards, platform architecture, and long-term AI roadmaps within Capital One’s Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) organization.

Role scope

• Partner with a cross-functional group of engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products for internal and customer-facing use cases.
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components including foundation model training, large language model inference, agents and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
• Use a broad stack of Open Source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, and PyTorch.
• Introduce state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to improve performance, scalability, cost, latency, and throughput in production environments.
• Contribute to the technical vision and the long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One.
• Define and steer the technical AI architecture vision by integrating applied research breakthroughs into production ecosystems with reliability and scale.
• Help establish AI performance, safety, and transparency standards that guide model development and deployment across the company.
• Drive multi-year platform initiatives that unify data, compute, and model lifecycle management within an enterprise AI architecture.
• Mentor senior technical leaders across research, data, and engineering disciplines to develop the next generation of AI technical leadership.

Minimum qualifications

• Education and experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or Master’s degree in a related field plus at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies.
• Programming: At least 10 years of experience programming with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.

Compensation and logistics

• Location: McLean, VA (remote)
• Salary: USD 314,800 to 359,300 per year
• The role may include performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
