Sr. Staff AI Engineer

Capital One is hiring a Sr. Staff AI Engineer in Richmond, VA (onsite) to help build responsible, scalable AI systems for banking experiences. You will work on foundational AI platforms and multi-year platform initiatives, with a focus on model training and inference, evaluation and governance, and production-ready reliability.

What you’ll work on

• Collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products that improve how associates work and how customers interact with Capital One.
• Design, build, test, deploy, and support AI software components across the lifecycle, including foundation model training, large language model inference, agents and multi-agent workflows, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
• Use and integrate a broad set of Open Source and SaaS AI technologies, including AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, and PyTorch.
• Develop state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to improve scalability, cost, latency, and throughput for large-scale production AI systems.
• Shape the technical vision and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems across Capital One.
• Define and guide AI architecture, bringing applied research breakthroughs into production ecosystems with reliability and scale.
• Establish AI performance, safety, and transparency standards that inform model development and deployment across the company.
• Drive multi-year platform initiatives that unify data, compute, and model lifecycle management under a cohesive enterprise AI architecture.
• Mentor senior technical leaders across research, data, and engineering, helping develop the next generation of Capital One’s AI technical leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies; or Master’s degree plus at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies.
• At least 10 years of experience programming with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java.

Compensation and benefits

Salary: USD 286,200 - 326,700 per year.
