HRU Tech seeks a direct-hire Controls Design Engineer for an onsite role in Lansing, Michigan. The position centers on the design, programming, and analysis of machine tool control systems used in high-precision microfinishing equipment. Compensation ranges from USD 95,000 to 115,000 per year, with a comprehensive benefits package.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design of machine controls to meet design specifications while minimizing cost and engineering time, reusing existing designs and programs where feasible.
- Create component layouts that satisfy all specifications, prioritizing compactness, safety, reliability, simplicity, and low total cost.
- Program machine controllers to operate efficiently with all required safety features integrated.
- Evaluate internal and external design capabilities and provide accurate information and documentation to keep designs on schedule and aligned with customer specs.
- Coordinate and lead control design reviews with the Mechanical Project Engineer and assigned Coordinators prior to build.
- Provide all required documentation to customer as scheduled for approval.
- Maintain organized records of purchase orders and drawing approvals for each assigned job.
- Obtain competitive quotations for electrical control enclosures, push button stations, and related items; issue requisitions while accounting for long lead-time components to sustain project schedules.
- Collaborate with shop personnel during build, startup, debug, and run-off activities to support successful machine deployment.
- Support Service Technicians and Training personnel during machine startup at customer sites.
- Provide support to the Sales & Parts Department as needed.
- Attend meetings regarding job content, scheduling, and progress as requested by the Customer, Sales Department, Manufacturing, or Management.
- Remain current with industry technology and advise the Engineering Manager on new trends for potential incorporation into machine designs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Masterβs degree in Controls Engineering or a related field is preferred; highly qualified candidates without a degree may be considered with relevant experience.
- Minimum education: High School Diploma or GED.
- 2 to 3+ years of experience in machine tools or a related industry; 5+ years is ideal.
- Experience with engines or powertrains is a plus.
- Working knowledge of Allen Bradley, Siemens, and Fanuc PLCs and HMI software; experience with EPlan design software is a plus.
- Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office and Windows operating systems.
- Strong analytical abilities to transform data into actionable insights and recommendations.
- Self-motivated, self-directed, and highly organized with strong written and oral communication skills.
- Willingness to work hands-on in the plant and at customer facilities as needed.
