Applied AI Engineer

Appian’s “AI-First” transformation creates a hands-on opportunity to build production-grade AI solutions for internal teams. In this onsite role in McLean, VA, you’ll help turn manual work into AI-assisted workflows, define how those tools are evaluated for reliability, and partner closely with stakeholders, IT, and Information Security to ensure safe and effective deployment.

What you’ll build

• Design, build, and maintain production-quality prompts, Gemini Gems, NotebookLMs, and Appian AI workflows for internal use.
• Break down manual tasks into AI-assisted steps, delivering solutions from development through deployment with non-technical customers in mind.
• Maintain an internal repository for employee self-service prompts, with versioning and organization so shipped tools stay documented and easy to discover.

How you’ll measure reliability

• Establish an evaluation framework to improve reliability and compare model performance for business tasks.
• Develop practices that support consistent outcomes as AI capabilities evolve over time.

Collaboration and AI expertise

• Act as the resident expert on the Google Gemini ecosystem and Amazon Kiro, staying current on emerging AI technologies for the organization.
• Partner with IT and Information Security to red-team tools and help ensure prompts follow data-handling and protocol requirements.

Required experience

• 3-5+ years of hands-on experience with modern LLMs and shipping AI agents in real-world applications, or equivalent experience in a high-growth SaaS or technology environment.
• Subject-matter expertise in the Google Gemini ecosystem, Amazon Kiro, and other industry-standard tools, including direct experience with prompting and building automation workflows.
• Comfort with scripting to wire data sources and automate workflow components, with strong aptitude for integrating varying systems into AI solutions.
• Exceptional communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to less technical audiences.

Location and schedule

This role is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Employees hired for this position are expected to be in the office 5 days a week.

Compensation

USD 100,000 - 225,000 per yearly
