Job Description

Join AES Corporation in Dayton, Ohio on site as an Associate Transmission Planning Engineer. This role offers the opportunity to influence the reliability, adequacy, and security of the 34.5 kV to 345 kV transmission system under FERC 715. You will conduct and support steady-state, dynamic, transient, and voltage-stability analyses, helping shape planning studies that ensure AES Indiana customers receive reliable service. The position involves collaboration with Indiana's utilities, participation in regional planning processes, and readiness for regulatory audits and plan reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Support the annual NERC TPL-001 Transmission System Planning Performance Assessment by applying steady-state, short-circuit, and dynamic analyses with TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, and DSA Tools in alignment with FERC 715.
  • Assist in documenting the NERC EOP-005 System Restoration assessment from Blackstart Resources using PSCAD for transient studies.
  • Help document the annual NERC CIP-014 Physical Security assessment by modeling realistic and historical attacks on transmission equipment to evaluate potential instability, separation, or cascading within an interconnection, using TARA, PSS®E, and DSA Tools.
  • Assist with or perform FAC-002 qualified changes and material modification impact studies to determine if new or modified load, generation, or transmission could prevent meeting FERC 715 performance requirements, using steady-state, short-circuit, dynamic, and transient techniques with TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, and DSA Tools.
  • Support evaluation of transmission system optimization and proposed plans to reduce overall investments while incorporating traditional methods and new technologies such as GETs.
  • Participate in stakeholder meetings, plan projects, and evaluate MISO’s MTEP to ensure a just and reasonable transmission scope using steady-state, short-circuit, dynamic analyses with TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, and DSA Tools under FERC 715.
  • Engage in stakeholder processes for MISO’s Expedited Project Review (EPR) and Expedited Resource Adequacy Study (ERAS), assisting planning and evaluation with steady-state, short-circuit, dynamic, and transient analyses using TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, DSA Tools, and PSCAD as governed by FERC 715.
  • Collaborate with Indiana’s five investor-owned utilities and two generation and transmission cooperatives to develop a cost-effective forecasted Transmission Plan serving current and future Indiana customers.
  • Prepare for and respond to regulatory audits by NERC, IURC, FERC, and MISO to demonstrate adherence to Transmission and Distribution Tariffs and NERC compliance.
  • Provide Transmission Operations Control Center assistance during emergencies such as severe weather, repairs, or system restoration to ensure timely energization for AES Indiana customers.
  • Document tasks related to NERC standards including TPL-007, TPL-008, FAC-003, FAC-010, FAC-011, FAC-014, PRC-012, and PRC-026 using steady-state, short-circuit, dynamic, and transient techniques with TARA, PSS®E, ASPEN, DSA Tools, and PSCAD as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.

Highly Desired Skills

  • Degree, certificate, or equivalent experience in power systems studies.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering exam passed.

  • In-depth knowledge of NERC, FERC, and PJM/MISO regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Solid technical understanding of transmission grid concepts.
  • Experience with PSSE, TARA, DSA Tools or comparable software.
  • Experience with ASPEN, CAPE, or similar tools.
  • Experience with PSCAD or similar transient analysis software.
