Cybersecurity Engineer

Amentum is seeking a Cybersecurity Engineer to support NASA deep space exploration under the JETSII Contract, working onsite in Houston, TX. In this role, you will lead proactive cybersecurity efforts to help protect spacecraft systems, including Flight Software (FSW) and embedded hardware, through testing, threat modeling, vulnerability research, and red team/blue team activities.

Salary starts at USD 83,700 per year, with final compensation determined based on the candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications. The position requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience and is supported by an engineering, cybersecurity, or cyber operations education background.

Responsibilities

• Lead rigorous security testing, threat modeling, and vulnerability assessments for Flight Software (FSW) and embedded spacecraft hardware.
• Perform security evaluations to identify and mitigate security weaknesses.
• Research advanced spacecraft vulnerabilities and emerging cyber threats impacting spaceflight architectures and embedded systems.
• Conduct non-disruptive penetration testing and red-teaming campaigns targeting the Space Segment (flight software, RTOS, on-board buses), Link Segment (RF telemetry, CCSDS protocols), and Ground Segment (mission control).
• Run deep-dive “bounty hunting” and vulnerability analysis on third-party software, open-source repositories, and embedded microcode used in safety-critical systems.
• Plan and execute interactive Red Team versus Blue Team exercises to validate defensive capabilities and strengthen cyber resilience.
• Partner with software, systems, and integration teams to incorporate cybersecurity best practices throughout the development lifecycle.
• Document findings, provide risk-based recommendations, and support remediation and mitigation activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent certification in a related area, plus 5 years of experience in the field or a related area.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Cybersecurity, or Cyber Operations.
• Experience performing security testing on software, firmware, embedded systems, or mission-critical platforms.
• Experience conducting threat modeling and risk assessments for complex systems.
• Experience performing vulnerability assessments on critical software and hardware systems.
• Experience with embedded software penetration testing, red teaming, or vulnerability research applied to aerospace or critical infrastructure platforms.
• Demonstrated experience writing custom testing scripts and low-level code targeting resource-constrained environments using C/C++, Python, and Assembly.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including communicating technical findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.

Requisition Preferences

• Experience with spacecraft, satellite, aerospace, defense, or other safety-critical systems.
• Experience with Flight Software (FSW) development, testing, or security assessments.
• Knowledge of secure software development practices and DevSecOps methodologies.
• Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional engineering environment and support multiple projects simultaneously.

Additional Information

• Proof of citizenship / investigation: Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency may be required. Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
• Work environment: Generally office environment, with potential inside or outside work depending on task.
• Physical requirements: Sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
