Data Analytics Engineer

The Data Analytics Engineer at The University of Texas at Austin designs, builds, and maintains integrated data solutions that support decision-making across academic, research, and administrative areas. The role works with both local datasets and central campus information through the UT Data Hub framework.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, code, validate, and implement relational databases and integrated data structures that enable analytics.
• Partner with functional stakeholders to gather business requirements and develop or refine business logic.
• Coordinate with technical teams to locate, clean, and orchestrate source data.
• Write code to translate and transform business logic into a scalable database environment supporting descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics.
• Support production of consumable outputs such as reports, dashboards, and other tools for university use.
• Design database structures that align with meaningful data visualizations and interactive tools.
• Apply data engineering and analytics best practices, including robust validation, testing and deployment procedures, data mining algorithms, version control, code integration, documentation, and automation and streamlining of data pipelines.
• Use creativity and flexibility to address new institutional data challenges.
• Assist with special projects and ad hoc data requests as needed.
• Work independently and with cross-functional teams to deliver data products that meet university needs.
• Participate in the full data project lifecycle, from conception and requirements gathering through design, documentation, development and testing, and deployment.
• Communicate with partners and stakeholders to manage requests, expectations, and deliverables.
• Provide project status, progress updates, risk reporting, and issue communication to support completion.
• Build an in-depth understanding of university data processes and technologies.
• Handle confidential information with tact and discretion.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Strong SQL expertise for querying large databases, manipulating and validating data, implementing business logic, and analyzing data.
• Excellent knowledge of databases, data flows, and data manipulation in both operational and analytical contexts.
• Proven ability to synthesize complex or ambiguous information from multiple sources using varied tools and techniques to produce consumable insights.
• Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders in a higher-education or enterprise setting.
• Proven prioritization and organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated professionalism.
• Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a higher education or research environment.
• Familiarity with institutional data domains such as student, enrollment, research, finance, or HR.
• Experience working with cloud data platforms or analytics services and PostgreSQL environments.
• Experience supporting business intelligence or analytics tools including Power BI and Tableau.
• Knowledge of data governance, stewardship, and compliance in higher education.
• Experience collaborating across decentralized organizations.
• Familiarity with UT Austin’s administrative computing environment.
• Experience with metadata management software.

Compensation and Location

Salary: USD 80,000 per year (plus adjustments based on qualifications).
Location: Austin, TX 78701 (hybrid).
