Data Engineer Principal

The Data Engineer Principal role at FedEx is responsible for leading enterprise data engineering innovation, setting technical direction, and ensuring that critical data assets are ingested, transformed, tested, and delivered through reliable pipelines. The position also includes end-to-end ownership of high-impact initiatives and guidance for less senior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

• Own critical data engineering initiatives end to end, including accountability for delivery and outcomes.
• Advance FEC broad capabilities by enabling the use and deployment of advanced data engineering tools and methods across FEC projects, platforms, and products.
• Champion the design and build of reusable data engineering assets to establish and reinforce current best practices.
• Promote up-to-date, sophisticated approaches for addressing extremely large-scale and complex data engineering problems.
• Oversee the design, build, test, and ongoing maintenance of data pipelines operating at big data scale.
• Lead batch processing of collected data to ensure readiness for downstream analysis.
• Create and maintain processes that keep the data ecosystem optimized and efficient, including troubleshooting performance and data-related issues and providing expert guidance.
• Independently implement parsers, validators, transformers, and correlators to reformat, update, and improve data assets.
• Apply knowledge across data engineering methods, CI/CD, statistics, and machine learning practices to recommend solutions for organizationally critical and complex data problems.
• Advise junior data engineers, managers, and other less senior professionals.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in information systems, Computer Science, or a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics or Engineering, or equivalent formal training or work experience.
• Directly related PhD preferred.
• Seven (7) years, or equivalent, experience in measurement and analysis, quantitative business problem solving, simulation development, and/or predictive analytics.
• Extensive knowledge of data engineering and machine learning frameworks, including design, development, and implementation of highly complex systems and data pipelines.
• Extensive knowledge of information systems, including design, development, and implementation of large batch systems or online transaction-based systems.
• Strong understanding of the transportation industry, competitors, and evolving technologies.
• Experience providing expert leadership in general planning or consulting environments.
• Experience as a leader or senior member of multi-functional project teams.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with senior audiences.
• A related advanced degree may offset related experience requirements.

Location and Work Arrangement

• This hybrid role is based in Plano, TX.
• Candidates residing within 50 miles of a FedEx campus will be required to work on-site at a FedEx location several times per week.

Compensation

Estimated monthly salary range: USD 11,766.26 to 15,884.45 for the Plano pay range.

• The compensation range is provided as a reasonable estimate of the current starting salary range for this role across all potential locations.
• Actual starting pay is determined by experience relative to the job, market level, pay at the location, and other job-related factors, as permitted by law.
