Responsibilities

The Instrumentation Engineer performs all aspects of complete design for complex electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments. Work is completed under general supervision in the Pasadena office and spans design, estimating, specifications, checking, and field or startup support. This level includes advanced engineering techniques and analysis, plus discipline leadership responsibilities on small to mid-sized projects.

  • Apply department design and drafting standards and support ongoing project execution
  • Review project scope, specifications, and design criteria with assigned project task teams
  • Recognize and communicate scope and design changes promptly
  • Provide on-site assistance during startup
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel
  • Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead
  • Serve as discipline lead on small to mid-sized projects
  • Produce estimate-level designs and material take-offs appropriate to the estimate being performed
  • Create detail design calculations and sketches for materials of construction
  • Produce 15kV/5kV equipment specifications and electrical installation specifications
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to identify the simplest and most efficient approach
  • Create installation details and electrical deliverables including motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, and grounding, lighting, power, and instrumentation plans under general supervision
  • Check calculations completed by other engineers for accuracy, code and specification conformance, and good engineering practice
  • Assist the drafting group with routine layout and detailing problems
  • Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure smooth information flow for scheduled completion
  • Advise senior engineers on design or scope changes
  • Support electrical and instrumentation “package” development for purchase inquiries and procurement of materials or subcontract pricing
  • Review and check vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for electrical and instrumentation input
  • Develop construction specifications and review fabrication drawings and construction submittals for conformance
  • Perform fieldwork to gather field data, check tie-ins, and provide construction support
  • Estimate and schedule professional service hours and assess progress and quality of electrical and instrumentation work
  • Lead communication and execution of work within scope, schedule, and budget

Requirements

  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is required
  • 6 or more years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering
  • Professional Engineering registration is highly preferred
  • Knowledge and application of the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Ability to perform lighting level calculations, voltage drop calculations, and to size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power
  • Ability to route conduit and cable tray, calculate tray and conduit fill, and determine motor control center loading
  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details for construction bulk materials and equipment
  • Ability to create electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings
  • Ability to determine load center unit substation loading and develop specifications for equipment such as motor control centers, variable frequency drivers, induction and synchronous motors, and load center unit substations
  • Ability to produce a 15kV power system single line diagram and demonstrate familiarity with 15kV power system equipment and installation techniques above and below ground
  • Ability to develop 15kV/5kV equipment specifications and perform calculations for required short circuit and overcurrent protective device ratings for items such as switchgear, load break switches, and motor control centers
  • Ability to estimate completion of assigned tasks, develop construction cost estimates, engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets
  • Ability to determine construction material quantities
  • Experience contributing to P&ID development for measurement and control, plus ability to develop control narratives
  • Ability to specify process instrumentation and develop installation details, size control valves using appropriate software, and develop specifications and data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, control systems, and actuated valves
  • Knowledge of standards that apply to instrumentation and controls (ISA)
  • Ability to act as discipline engineer of record for projects that require professional engineering certification
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards
  • Programming experience with PLC, HMI, and/or DCS equipment
  • Ability to lead a small team to deliver on commitments
  • Ability to deliver presentations of Hargrove Engineers + Constructors services
  • Working knowledge of CAD software, either AutoCAD, Microstation, or both
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time
