Mechanical Engineer

Napakiak Environmental and Construction (NEC) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer, PE to support Utilities and Site Modernization projects in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The position focuses on piping and fluid transfer engineering, along with technical field oversight while coordinating multiple concurrent design and construction efforts.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage multiple design and construction projects simultaneously, meeting scope, schedule, and budget or available funding requirements from conception through turnover to operations.
• Create project definitions, scopes of work, methods of accomplishment, and baseline forecasts, including schedules and cost or spending profiles.
• Identify staffing and other resource needs and communicate these requirements to resource managers.
• Develop, review, and approve design documentation, change orders, material requisitions, and specifications for construction and procurement use.
• Lead periodic project and customer or stakeholder meetings to support communication, review progress and performance, discuss issues, and facilitate problem resolution.
• Serve as the mechanical engineering lead for assigned projects by developing Mechanical Systems Scopes of Work aligned with project objectives and providing support to project teams as needed.
• Review contractor proposals to confirm alignment with scope and objectives.
• Proactively identify potential design risks, including cost impacts, quality concerns, and code compliance issues, and resolve them in a timely manner to avoid schedule disruption.
• Coordinate technical issue resolution with the design team, design and project management, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Conduct design reviews to confirm that documents such as drawings, specifications, data sheets, and cost estimates align with scope and meet project objectives.

Required Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant engineering field.
• Minimum 8 years of experience leading design and construction management across multiple disciplines.
• Professional Engineer registered in the state of TN.
• Experience developing piping systems design, including pipe sizing, pump selection, and pumping system controls.
• Experience coordinating with Operations and managing field tie-ins in a Co-Occupancy setting involving Operations, Construction Contractor, and Vendor stakeholders.
• Ability to create, organize, and manage project documentation from conception through completion, including storage of closeout and as-built documentation in site datebase systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing constructability reviews, options analysis, and conceptual engineering to address construction conditions not anticipated during design.
• Experience coordinating design and construction activities in the field and within sensitive research facility environments such as energy plants, utility rooms, and research laboratory spaces.
• Demonstrated site utility systems design experience, including areas such as communications, electrical, mechanical, potable water, sanitary sewer, steam, and storm water.
• OSHA 30 Construction Safety.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Motivated self-starter able to work independently and contribute creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
• Ability to perform in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to complete multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.

Location and Compensation

Location: Oak Ridge, TN (onsite).
Salary: USD 148,000 - 168,000 per year.

BS in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering field.
