Role overview
The Senior Engineer, Tailings & Closure role is based in Spokane, WA with a hybrid work arrangement. You will serve as the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) for Teck's U.S. facilities, taking primary responsibility for Pend Oreille Mine closure and the transition of tailings facilities. The position leads closure design, dam safety governance, and related programs to meet closure objectives across the portfolio.
Location: Spokane, Washington. This role requires periodic travel to sites and on-site presence at the Pend Oreille Mine as needed.
Responsibilities
- Model and reinforce a strong safety culture, adhering to and promoting safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Act as the RTFE for U.S. tailings facilities, with primary responsibility for Pend Oreille Mine facilities, ensuring dam safety, structural integrity, and alignment with closure objectives
- Guide and assess tailings closure design strategies for the Pend Oreille Mine, including dam safety management aligned with closure, surveillance evolution, water management considerations, and long-term performance goals
- Provide geotechnical and geoenvironmental leadership for tailings and water-retaining structures, supporting investigations, construction, instrumentation, monitoring programs, and other closure-related field activities
- Lead and participate in dam safety inspections, Independent Tailings Review Board engagements, and internal governance reviews, ensuring findings inform closure decisions and future programs
- Evaluate and prioritize recommendations from inspections and audits, driving their implementation within closure planning, capital prioritization, and long-term stewardship
- Ensure OMS documentation and training programs are suitable for closure-stage and closed tailings facilities
- Support the management of closed tailings facilities across the U.S. dormant property portfolio, aligning with regulatory and governance requirements
- Prepare technical, regulatory, and internal reports while maintaining clear communication with the Accountable Executive and stakeholders
- Manage contractors and consultants rigorously, including scope, budget, execution oversight, safety compliance, quality control, and review of technical deliverables
- Identify and document tailings and environmental risks across the dormant and closure portfolio, maintaining tailings risk registers per Teck standards
- Collaborate with environment, water management, closure planning, regulatory affairs, operations support, and governance teams to deliver integrated closure outcomes
- Stay current with industry best practices, evolving regulations, and new technologies related to tailings management, dam safety, and long-term surveillance
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Environmental, Geological, or Mining Engineering, with possible specialization in Geotechnical/Tailing Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or Mine Closure; Master’s degree or equivalent experience is advantageous
- Minimum 10 years in geotechnical, tailings, environmental, or mining engineering, from operations, closure-focused work, consulting, regulatory compliance, or technical leadership
- Registered, or eligible to be registered, as a Professional Engineer in Washington, Montana, and Missouri
- Demonstrated experience supporting or leading tailings facilities transitioning from operation to closure, including closure design development, evaluation of options, planning, or execution support
- Experience in geotechnical and geo-environmental data analysis, surveillance/monitoring systems (including remote/automated monitoring), dam safety inspections, geotechnical investigations, and project management
- Proven experience on complex or legacy tailings facilities with evolving conditions or incomplete historical data
- Strong track record leading external consultants and contractors, with ability to address deficiencies constructively and collaboratively
- Solid understanding of tailings governance, dam safety practices, and the RTFE role within regulatory and corporate governance
- Knowledge of U.S. federal and state regulatory requirements for mine closure and tailings management (OSHA, CERCLA, RCRA, state programs)
- Experience with Washington, Montana, and Missouri regulatory frameworks is an asset
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, or the ability to obtain
- Valid driver’s license
Pay range
USD 101,000 to 125,000 per year. The final offer will reflect relevant experience, skills, and internal equity.
