Akumin offers a competitive annual salary of USD 125,000 to 150,000 with a remote-friendly arrangement based in Ashland, Nebraska. This Senior Data Engineer role centers on building an enterprise data platform to support analytics and AI, overseeing data storage infrastructure, third‑party integrations, data provisioning, and ETL/ELT tooling to enable rapid decision making.
Responsibilities
- Develop and optimize complex SQL queries for data extraction, manipulation, reporting, and transformation.
- Design and implement robust ETL/ELT pipelines using custom tooling (Python/Google) and off‑the‑shelf tooling, with a focus on monitoring, supportability, and resource stewardship.
- Contribute to coding standards and best practices to ensure efficient, reusable services and components.
- Architect, implement, and deploy new data models and data processes into production.
- Build data pipelines that acquire, cleanse, transform, and publish data from a wide variety of sources.
- Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional and non-functional business requirements.
- Partner with data asset managers, architects, and development leads to ensure the technical solution provides data fit for use and aligns with architecture blueprints.
- Identify, document, design, and implement internal process improvements.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, MIS, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in Data Management, ETL/ELT, or Data Warehousing.
- Experience writing Data Quality routines for data cleansing, capturing confidence scores, and Master Data Management (MDM).
- Hands-on experience designing and implementing data pipelines and ELT/ETL processes (for example Fivetran, DBT).
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure) and related services (BigQuery, S3, Snowflake, etc.).
- Strong understanding of data modeling, data integration, and data governance principles (DBT).
- Experience in a highly regulated domain (for example Healthcare, Banking, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of SQL and T‑SQL.
- Experience using scripting languages such as JavaScript or Python.
- Experience with agile delivery methodologies.
- Strong organizational, administrative, and analytical skills.
- Travel may be required between 5 to 10%.
Preferred Requirements
- Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, MIS, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
- DBT Certification.
- Data modeling experience is preferred.
- Experience with Clinical Data and Regulatory Governance in a Healthcare setting.
- Experience with healthcare data models, datasets, and source systems (EHR, claims, DICOM images, labs, etc.).
- Experience with healthcare reference data (ICD, CPT, etc.).
- Experience with big data technologies (Kafka, Hadoop, Spark) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with FHIR and FHIR store formats and data repositories.
- Hands-on design and configuration experience with Google Cloud Platform data storage and processing services.
- Data governance principles and enterprise frameworks (Warehousing, Data-as-a-Product, MESH, MDM).
- Knowledge of HIPAA and the ability to implement systems and processes in compliance with regulations.
