Senior Electrical Engineer – PCBA Schematic & Layout
Job Description
The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead PCB schematic and layout ownership for high-reliability products, guiding designs from concept through production support in demanding environments. This onsite role in Austin, TX emphasizes cross-functional collaboration to design, validate, document, and troubleshoot prototype builds.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop primarily digital and power-based PCB designs; analog design may be involved.
- Own the full PCB design lifecycle, including requirements, major component selection, block diagrams, schematic, circuit analysis, placement, routing, and DFA/DFM review.
- Support prototype testing activities, including bring-up, debugging, and documentation.
- Create and maintain BOMs, design files, netlists, and manufacturing documentation.
- Coordinate with mechanical engineering to integrate PCBs into enclosures and assemblies.
- Lead or assist prototype bring-up, debugging, and testing with support from firmware/software teams (firmware/software capability for bring-up is a plus).
- Perform signal integrity, power budgeting, and thermal analysis as needed.
- Review and optimize for EMC/EMI compliance and environmental robustness.
- Interface with fabrication and assembly vendors, resolve build issues, and drive quality improvements.
- Participate in design reviews and peer reviews to maintain engineering standards.
- Contribute to engineering process improvements, including libraries and design guidelines.
- Support ITAR/export compliance and follow applicable standards including MIL-STD and IPC-610/6012.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 3+ years of professional experience with PCB schematic and layout design.
- Proficiency with Altium Designer (or equivalent EDA tools).
- Experience with multi-layer board design and high-speed or mixed-signal circuitry.
- Strong understanding of electronic components, circuit theory, and board-level design principles.
- Ability to interpret datasheets, standards, and mechanical constraints.
- Proven experience with DFM and DFT.
- Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in defense, aerospace, or other safety/mission-critical industries.
- Familiarity with ruggedized systems and environmental needs such as high-temperature operation and water-intrusion protection.
- Knowledge of MIL-STD, IPC standards, or similar frameworks.
- Experience with SPICE simulations, Signal Integrity Analysis, or reliability engineering.
- Ability to work with firmware, FPGA, or embedded teams.
- Active or previous security clearance (or ability to obtain one).
- Ownership mentality and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, product-focused environment.
