Job Description

The Senior Financial Data & Analytics Engineer at Stony Brook University designs, builds, and sustains enterprise financial data infrastructure for the School of Medicine. The role covers creating data pipelines, integrating core systems, and delivering executive dashboards, with a high degree of independence to architect scalable, secure analytics that inform institutional financial strategy.

Role Overview

The incumbent operates under general direction to develop robust data architectures, support financial planning, and enable data-driven decision making for leadership across departments. This position requires collaboration with IT, enterprise data teams, and key stakeholders to ensure reliable, high-performance analytics aligned with institutional goals.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy a centralized financial data warehouse that consolidates data from PeopleSoft, HR, CPMP, Report Center, SOMDASH, and external sources.
  • Develop and sustain ETL and ELT pipelines for both structured and semi-structured data.
  • Build and manage API-based data ingestion pipelines.
  • Ensure the data architecture remains scalable, fast, and reliable.
  • Collaborate with IT and enterprise data teams on infrastructure and platforms design.
  • Develop analytics models for physician productivity (wRVUs), reimbursement, and compensation.
  • Incorporate benchmarking data such as Vizient for comparative performance analyses.
  • Construct predictive and trend models to support financial planning.
  • Analyze payer mix, revenue cycles, and department-level cost structures.
  • Design data models to support funds flow, ROI analysis, and All-Funds financial reporting.
  • Develop multi-dimensional datasets integrating clinical, academic, and financial data.
  • Establish standardized metrics and definitions for institutional reporting.
  • Support scenario modeling and financial forecasting efforts.
  • Develop and maintain executive dashboards using Tableau or equivalent BI tools.
  • Create self-service analytics tools for departments and leadership.
  • Design intuitive, scalable, and interactive reporting solutions.
  • Translate complex datasets into actionable insights for stakeholders.
  • Establish and enforce data quality, validation, and reconciliation processes.
  • Support data governance frameworks and compliance with institutional policies.
  • Collaborate with SOM Finance, Clinical Practice, HR, IT, and leadership stakeholders.
  • Present findings and recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Perform other duties and special projects in support of departmental and institutional research missions.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of full-time experience in data engineering, data analytics, or financial analytics within a healthcare or enterprise environment.
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases, data warehouse design (dimensional modeling, star schema), ETL/ELT pipeline development, API integration and data ingestion, and Tableau or equivalent BI platforms.
  • Experience integrating data across ERP systems (such as PeopleSoft), HR systems, and operational or clinical data sources.
  • Knowledge of physician productivity metrics (e.g., wRVUs) and healthcare financial data structures.
