Senior Powertrain Engineer
Job Description
HFE International is building and supporting propulsion systems through hands-on testing, development, and troubleshooting. If you want to work onsite in Phoenix, apply technical depth to real engine challenges, and collaborate directly with customers, this role brings together simulation, calibration, dyno testing, diagnostics, and test team leadership.
Role Purpose
Test, develop, and troubleshoot propulsion systems for both the company and its customers. The position also supports diagnostics and failure mode investigation, including analysis work such as propeller and thermal assessment.
Responsibilities
- Develop engine systems and sub systems, including design and development of new engines
- Run engines on the dyno and calibrate EFI system maps
- Write test plans and test reports, and document results as requested
- Perform engine simulation, EFI calibration, dyno testing, and new product testing and evaluation
- Interface with customers and support questions related to engine package design
- Travel to customer sites to support engine diagnostics (international travel is common)
- Diagnose failure modes
- Support propeller analysis and thermal analysis
- Manage and support a group of test engineers
- Create and manage documentation, drawings, and reports as required
Requirements
- Experience with engine designs (preferably 2 stroke)
- Experience with engine tuning and EFI calibration maps
- Demonstrated knowledge of Scientific Process
- MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering
- Knowledge of combustion process and thermodynamics
- Basic understanding of engines (2 stroke and 4 stroke)
- MATLAB experience
- Python experience
- National Instruments data acquisition hardware and analysis
Preferred Qualifications
- 10 years of powertrain related experience

Location, Type, and Pay
Location: Phoenix, AZ (onsite).
Job type: Full-time.
Pay: USD 90,000 to 130,000 per year.
Disclaimers
- This position involves engine noise levels within OSHA guidelines as long as the employee wears proper PPE while the engine is operating.
- This position involves transporting documents and parts to various customers and vendors in the Tucson area. Transportation within Tucson will not be compensated for. Any travel outside of Tucson will be compensated with standard GSA approved travel and lodging rates.
