Location: Niwot, CO (hybrid). Reports to the Research Director. The role centers on setting technical direction and leading the development of high-sensitivity detection systems while mentoring engineering and research staff.
Responsibilities
- Architect and implement ultra‑low‑noise analog front‑end electronics to maximize signal‑to‑noise ratio in optical detection systems
- Define detector requirements and specifications for photodiodes, APDs, SPADs, SiPMs, and arrays in collaboration with vendors
- Lead the development and evaluation of optical imaging and light collection systems for weak‑signal environments
- Analyze detector physics, noise sources, and system‑level performance limitations
- Research and evaluate emerging photonics and detector technologies to guide R&D directions
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and knowledge transfer to engineering and research staff
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to support advanced instrumentation development programs
- Continuously evaluate processes for improvements in efficiency, quality, and performance

Requirements
- MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, or related field
- Very low level light detection systems experience
- Low noise amplifier design and circuit architecture
- Precision PCB layout for sensitive analog systems
- Optical detection and imaging systems expertise
- Fifteen (15) years of relevant experience
- Deep understanding of photonic detector devices and associated electronics
- Strong analytical, experimental, and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to independently evaluate and guide advanced photonics technology directions
- Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring capability

Compensation and benefits
Salary range: $140,000 - $175,000 per year, depending on experience. The company bases pay on market data across local, national, and industry benchmarks. Offers typically fall within the minimum to mid-range of the stated band, with flexibility to recognize experience, skills, and education. The approach supports internal equity and external competitiveness while allowing growth opportunities.
Work environment and physical requirements
- This is an in-office position 80-100% of the time. The remainder may be performed from home. Schedule details will be set in consultation with the Manager.
- Primary work is in an office, lab, or manufacturing environment. Must be able to sit, stand, and use a computer for extended periods.
- Occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs may be required
- Occasional work in laboratory environments with exposure to X-rays, radiation, and biological materials. All work follows established safety protocols and regulatory guidelines
