Job Description
PowerPlan’s Applied AI team is hiring an AI Data Engineer to build and govern the data foundation that powers AI used across finance, sales, professional services, and product.
Responsibilities
- Get up to speed on how the company operates across data systems in your first 30 days
- Deliver an owner-checked first catalog of critical data by the end of your first quarter, and keep it current enough by month 12 for business and technology leaders planning AI work
- Set team standards for data, connections, and code review within your first 30 days, including guidance for AI tool connectivity to business systems:
- Read-only by default
- No more complex than the job requires
- Reviewed by IT and security
- Partner with an AI engineer to lead the data for the team’s first larger build into pilot by 6 months
- By month 12, deliver data supporting at least two larger AI solutions that are in weekly use and run by the business
- Agree on the first shared datasets in your first quarter, publish the first one by 6 months
- By month 12, have at least two shared, governed datasets in use by more than one team or AI solution
- Within 12 months, retire hand-built recurring reports by defining the numbers once so an AI tool can:
- Draft commentary
- Answer questions
- Flag what needs human attention
Requirements
- 2 to 4 years professional experience as a data engineer, analytics engineer, or similar role where coding to clean and model data was central, or a master’s degree in a related field with at least 1 year of that experience
- Experience turning messy business data from a business system, spreadsheet, or documents into outputs people or an AI tool can use, including the ability to explain what broke and how it was fixed
- Ability to trace numbers back through systems and processes before building, including learning from data owners what the metric means and describing a time a business owner’s clarification changed the build
- Agentic coding tools (examples: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or OpenCode) are your default workflow, and you can plan work, direct the tool, and verify results
- Write working Python and SQL and can read and modify code written by others
- End-to-end API data extraction experience including authentication, secrets, paging, and errors
- Comfort working in Git, treating data access and documentation as part of the build, and writing notes a business owner can follow
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, information systems, or a closely related quantitative field (business analytics or other quantitative business degree also qualifies if it included substantial programming coursework)
- Can work from Atlanta at least 3 days per week in the office and is authorized to work in the United States (this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship, now or in the future)
Technologies

Even Better If…
- You’ve built an MCP server, an agent skill, or a connector someone else used
- You have experience with a modern data platform, RAG (retrieval over documents), or data quality checks
- You’ve worked with CRM, finance, or project data, ideally in or alongside finance, professional services, sales operations, or support
- You’ve applied continuous improvement methods such as Lean, Six Sigma, or value stream mapping
- You hold a master’s degree in a related field (computer science, information systems, data science, or business analytics)
Hybrid Work / Onsite Requirements
- This is a hybrid role with a mix of onsite work from the corporate office and work from home
- Flexible arrangements are considered when sensible, but onsite work is required at times
