AI Engineer
Job Description
Nu Image Medical is building a new NJ presence in the Mahwah / Wyckoff area, and this role is hands-on from day one. You will work in person and partner directly with the CTO to ship AI agent-powered workflows and production code. As a founding member of the office, you will help shape how the team builds, reviews, debugs, and improves secure systems built for healthcare-grade privacy.
Nu Image is a US telehealth company founded in 2004 and operating online since 2008, serving all 50 states and certified by LegitScript. The NJ office role supports a modern stack and a culture of ownership, initiative, and direct collaboration with leadership.
What you’ll do
- Own the AI engineering and the hands-on code development from architecture through shipped changes.
- Review diffs from agents running in parallel on branches, push back on bad code, and write the tricky parts yourself.
- Work through architecture and priorities with the CTO, then turn plans into production-ready code.
- Take ownership of code agents generate by reading every line, debugging and fixing issues by hand when needed.
- When something breaks in production, handle it rather than relying on what an agent produced.
- Investigate odd issues using logs, queries, a debugger, and careful debugging to find root causes.
- Spot issues nobody asked about (such as slow queries, flaky jobs, or tools that could save hours) and address them.
- Communicate outcomes: what shipped, what broke, and what you want to try next.
- Build a modern web platform and internal tools people actually enjoy using.
- Create integrations and automation that connect systems and remove busywork.
- Build AI-powered workflows, including agent setups, guardrails, and review steps that enable a small core to build like a much bigger one.
- Deliver secure, reliable, well-tested systems with healthcare-grade privacy and security baked in from day one.
- Take initiative: identify problems, fix them, and build better ways with visible follow-through.
What you’ll build with (with our CTO)
- A modern web platform and internal tools people actually enjoy using.
- Integrations and automation that connect systems and take busywork off people’s plates.
- AI-powered workflows with agent setups, guardrails, and review steps.
- Secure, reliable, well-tested systems with healthcare-grade privacy and security from day one.
Requirements
- Ship with AI coding agents daily, including Cursor and the Grok ecosystem (including Grok Bot), plus similar tools.
- Stay current with today’s AI tools and how they change month to month.
- Build real agent workflows with task breakdown, parallel agents, prompt and agent orchestration, and review loops.
- Verify agent output using tests first, reading diffs line by line, and not trusting output that only looks correct.
- Keep sensitive data (customer information, secrets, credentials) out of prompts, logs, and tools that aren’t approved.
- Build and debug without AI when needed; read unfamiliar code, step through it, and fix it by hand.
- Demonstrate solid software architecture and the ability to explain why systems are shaped as they are.
- Strong PHP and Laravel: queues, jobs, the scheduler, events, and Eloquent without N+1 issues.
- Real SQL skills with MySQL: schema design, indexing, migrations, query plan reading, and writing queries.
- Debugging experience using logs, stack traces, Xdebug or similar, and reproducing issues to reach root cause.
- Security and privacy best practices including authentication and authorization, input validation, encryption, least privilege, OWASP top risks, and secrets handling.
- Ability to commute to the Mahwah / Wyckoff area and want to be in the office.
