AI Engineer
Job Description
Nu Image® is building a new in-person engineering hub in New Jersey, and this role will serve as an AI engineering founding member. Working closely with the CTO, you will build and own agent-driven development and production code, with a strong focus on verification, secure handling of sensitive data, and hands-on debugging.
Role Focus
- Own AI engineering and hands-on code development for Nu Image’s agent-driven workflows.
- Work directly with the CTO to translate architecture and priorities into shipped systems.
- Review agent output line by line, debug and fix by hand when agents miss the mark, and ship reliable solutions for a telehealth environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand the system architecture and read every line the agents produce.
- Verify agent output using tests first, reviewing diffs line by line, and avoiding changes that only “look right.”
- Address production failures through direct fixes rather than relying on the agent as the source of truth.
- Identify gaps, then fix them or build improved approaches; contribute beyond the initially requested scope.
- Build a modern web platform and internal tools that are enjoyable to use.
- Create integrations and automation to reduce busywork and connect systems.
- Design AI-powered workflows, including agent setups, guardrails, and review steps that enable a small core to deliver at scale.
- Implement secure, reliable, well-tested systems with healthcare-grade privacy and security from day one.
- Run agents in parallel on branches, review diffs, push back on weak code, and implement the tricky parts yourself.
- Lead whiteboard sessions for new ideas, then convert the most promising concepts into working prototypes.
- Tackle complex debugging using logs, queries, a debugger, and iterative investigation.
- Spot issues before they are requested, such as slow queries, flaky jobs, or tools that would save time, then take action.
- Communicate outcomes by documenting what shipped, what broke, and what should be attempted next.
Required Qualifications
- Daily experience shipping with AI coding agents such as Cursor, the Grok ecosystem (including Grok Bot), and similar tooling, with a proven workflow.
- Up-to-date understanding of today’s AI tools and how they change month to month.
- Hands-on experience designing real agent workflows, including task breakdown, parallel agents, prompt and agent orchestration, and review loops.
- Strict output verification habits: tests first, diff review line by line, and no blind trust in superficial correctness.
- Ability to keep sensitive data (customer information, secrets, credentials) out of prompts, logs, and unapproved tools.
- Capability to build and debug without AI when needed, including reading unfamiliar code, stepping through it, and fixing by hand.
- Strong software architecture judgment, including the ability to foresee how an agent’s design choices may cause future issues.
- Proficiency in PHP and Laravel: queues, jobs, the scheduler, events, and Eloquent without N+1 issues.
- Strong SQL skills using MySQL: schema design, indexing, migrations, query plan reading, and writing queries.
- Debugging experience with logs, stack traces, Xdebug or similar, reproducing issues, and locating root causes.
- Security and privacy best practices including authentication and authorization, input validation, encryption, least privilege, OWASP top risks, and secrets handling.
- Ability to commute to the Mahwah / Wyckoff area and preference for being in the office.
