AI Engineer III

Premera Blue Cross is seeking an AI Engineer III to design and deliver AI and machine learning solutions from initial concept through production. This remote/telecommuter role focuses on building reliable AI systems at scale, partnering across teams to prototype, deploy, and maintain models and the platforms that support them.

Working from home within the United States, you will develop AI application frameworks, productionize machine learning capabilities using cloud services, and help ensure systems perform consistently with strong reliability practices and documentation.

Compensation

• Salary range: USD 118,900 - 230,500 per year
• National salary range: $118,900.00 - $202,100.00
• National plus salary range: $135,600.00 - $230,500.00

Responsibilities

• Develop comprehensive systems and frameworks for AI applications and products
• Build prototypes and minimum viable products to validate AI/ML solutions before major investment
• Develop, refine, and productionize AI systems using cloud resources such as Azure OpenAI, Azure ML, and Cognitive Services
• Contribute to robust data pipelines that support model evolution and production systems
• Create specifications for low-latency APIs and services to deploy AI models and integrate them into applications
• Supervise and sustain AI systems in production to maintain consistent model accuracy and reliability
• Participate in a team that uses principled, agile-like development practices
• Maintain thorough documentation aligned with team procedures, corporate policies, and expectations
• Ensure peer review on assigned work and conduct peer reviews for others as requested
• Guide junior AI engineers on AI/ML and industry best practices and methodologies
• Stay current on new tools and concepts through reading and active skills development
• Support and participate in meetings with external stakeholders

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field
• Or equivalent experience: 2+ years of experience in a related, professional IT/analytics position
• AI/ML experience: Minimum of 3 years developing, deploying, and maintaining AI or ML systems (up to two years may be substituted with an AI-centered Master’s/PhD or AI Engineering certifications)
• Deep learning frameworks: 4+ years developing deep learning models using TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLX, JAX, or other modern deep learning frameworks (experience with Theano or Caffe accepted; graduate education or research experience may supplement)
• Ethical AI: Knowledge and experience implementing ethical AI practices, including at least 2 years working on explainable AI, fairness, and bias mitigation
• Prompt engineering & security: 3+ years with advanced prompt engineering techniques (General Knowledge Prompting and ReAct), plus experience with LangChain or OpenPrompt; capability to mitigate prompt injection attacks using tools like Guardrails or PromptInject
• Productionization: 3+ years productionizing AI models, including scalable data pipelines and robust monitoring systems
• Agile-like environments: 3+ years working in Agile-like teams
• Experience building deep learning architectures including CNNs, transformers, GANs, LSTMs, GNNs, Autoencoders, Diffusion Models, and Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (NODEs)
• Ability to debug AI systems and improve performance using hyperparameter tuning and similar techniques
• Experience productionizing models with scalable data pipelines, low-latency services, and monitoring
• Familiarity with software design patterns, microservices, distributed computing, container orchestration, and related architectures
• Strong software engineering skills for secure, stable systems at scale
• Proficiency with Python and libraries including NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and scikit-learn; familiarity with traditional ML lifecycles
• Familiarity building minimal interfaces for AI products, such as Streamlit or Shiny
• Familiarity with ethical AI practices including explainable AI, fairness, and mitigation of bias/hallucinations
• Collaboration: Strong communication, collaboration, and mentorship skills
• Stakeholder communication: Growing ability to explain technical details and tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders clearly
