Analytics Engineer, Semantic Layer
Job Description
Clayco is building governed semantic models on the Snowflake platform to ensure finance, operations, and project controls share consistent, trusted metric definitions. This role focuses on translating business logic into audited models, migrating legacy reporting logic, and keeping metric logic reliable as upstream systems evolve.
Role Responsibilities
- Develop semantic models on Clayco’s Snowflake platform, including tests and documentation as part of completed work
- Translate business logic from finance, operations, and project controls into models that can withstand audit and review
- Move legacy reporting logic into governed models and assist in retiring the replaced logic
- Maintain model reliability as source systems change, preventing quiet downstream breakages from upstream field changes
- Respond to definitional questions from the business and document the resulting answers
Required Qualifications
- Strong SQL capability, including window functions and complex joins, along with the ability to judge whether a query is correct rather than only whether it returns rows
- High accountability for numeric correctness, including the persistence to investigate variances of a few hundred dollars when it indicates a logic issue
- Iterative inquiry and clarity-seeking, including the willingness to tell leadership when the calculation is not yet understood and to continue until it is
- Ability to act as an intermediary when teams’ reports disagree, explain differences, and support alignment on a single answer
- Potential early-career fit if fundamentals and curiosity are present, with senior engineers available to learn from
- Dimensional modeling experience, dbt, or construction background are welcome but not required
