Job Description
JLL is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer for an onsite role in Kenosha, WI. The position focuses on designing, developing, implementing, and supporting automation control systems for industrial processes and warehouse distribution equipment, with an emphasis on reliability and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the site technical expert for automation control systems.
- Train and mentor Automation Apprentices to support compliance with company and client safety and technical training requirements.
- Design and develop control systems and software programs.
- Implement and optimize automation processes.
- Maintain and troubleshoot control systems and machinery.
- Follow a strict documentation process for automation processes and programs.
- Adhere to the client’s Automation Change Management procedures.
- Collaborate with client teams, including building Operations, Engineering, Continuous improvement, and other support groups to drive MHE systems optimization and project implementation.
- Maintain and troubleshoot material handling control systems, including PLC/PC controllers and industrial networks such as Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus, ASi bus, motor control systems, servo drives, frequency drives, and electrical distribution systems.
- Monitor MHE metrics and partner with maintenance and operations to address system performance issues and provide analysis across operations.
- Act as first level escalation support for site technicians and automation engineering professionals during and after business hours, including local and remote troubleshooting and repair of controls hardware and software systems within the building.
- Escalate downtime situations to vendors and senior leadership to restore equipment operation.
- Facilitate Root Cause Failure Analysis and incident review processes, and support process improvements or retraining to prevent repeat incidents.
- Assess material handling system performance and support continuous improvement projects that deliver improved performance and cost savings.
- Communicate technical issues and project timelines with building leadership, operations, and the Reliability and Maintenance Engineering team.
- Explain production impacts and partner with operations to define and enforce operational work-around procedures during system failures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, automation engineering, or equivalent, or 2+ years of equivalent professional experience on account.
- Flexible schedule/shift/work area availability, including weekends, nights, and/or holidays.
- 2+ years of experience with PLC-controlled automation and issue diagnosis in a continuous process or production environment.
- 2+ years of experience with robotics work cells and their control systems.
- 2+ years of experience with Ladder Logic and structured programming from Siemens, Allen-Brady, or Codesys PLCs.
- Experience in a team lead capacity supporting, training, and mentoring less experienced automation engineering professionals.
- Advanced proficiency in verbal and written English.
- 2+ years of experience with electrical theory, robotics, controls components, and automated equipment.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures and communicate them to others.
- Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Continuous improvement and problem-solving mindset for system debugging.
- Adaptability and continuous learning to keep pace with industry trends.
- Experience coordinating complex maintenance activities with multiple stakeholders (Operations, Safety, and others).

Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in computer science, electrical engineering, automation engineering, or equivalent, and 2+ years of equivalent professional experience.
- 2+ years of experience identifying, maintaining, troubleshooting, programming, and designing HMI and control network components.
- 2+ years of experience identifying, maintaining, troubleshooting, and modifying motor controls, including motor starters, Variable Frequency Drives, DC drives, and standard electrical components.
- 2+ years of industrial electrical hands-on experience and troubleshooting, including 480V 3-phase, 110 VAC, and 24VDC systems.
- 2+ years of experience interpreting, modifying, and developing mechanical and electrical drawings.
- 2+ years of experience identifying, maintaining, and utilizing SCADA systems and KPIs.
- 2+ years of experience programming software such as RSLogix5000 studio, FT View, and other controls software platforms.
- 2+ years of experience in controls design or programming experience.
- Systems integration experience.
- 2+ years of field service engineering experience, systems trainer, or training experience.
- 2+ years of experience supporting a wide range of conveyors and sortation systems, along with excellent written, verbal, and customer service skills.
- Proven history of remote technical support.
- Experience driving continuous improvement or programmatic solutions related to automated equipment.
- Experience with advanced automation controls systems and industrial robotics.
- Experience with Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems (ASRS) systems.
