Job Description

The SIS Systems Engineer will serve as the site subject matter expert for functional safety, lifecycle management, and performance support for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Distributed Control System(s) across site applications and system software.

Responsibilities

Lead and support system lifecycle planning for SIS/DCS initiatives, including upgrade study efforts
Lead technical execution for medium to large SIS/DCS projects, covering design, installation, testing, commissioning, and operational acceptance
Lead or support new SIS systems and modifications to existing SIS installations
Verify Safety Integrity Level (SIL) targets are met through proper design and calculations
Develop and implement strategies for factory acceptance test (FAT) and software acceptance test (SAT)
Develop and deploy regulatory, supervisory, advanced control, and optimization schemes
Collaborate with Operations to analyze and reduce unnecessary alarms
Analyze and improve SIS/DCS interlocking strategies
Identify opportunities to optimize system performance and develop process control projects based on those opportunities
Analyze and drive mitigation of control system risks, including system security and network management
Develop recommendations for instrumentation upgrades to improve plant EHS and stability performance
Develop and deliver training to strengthen operator and engineering knowledge of interlock actions
Lead or support Management of Change (MOC) for control-related projects
Lead or support control system incident investigations
Understand SIS standards and implement related projects
Ensure proper documentation, validation, and audit readiness for SIS systems
Obtain stakeholder buy-in and support project justification
Serve as a technical resource to Operations during abnormal conditions
Develop and improve site control system procedures, policies, and standards
Coach, guide, and train technicians and operators on using control system technology and equipment
Support Process Automation operations by attending HAZOPs, PHA’s, LOPA, and MOC meetings
Maintain and update DCS/SIS/PLC hardware and software
Troubleshoot, analyze, develop, and implement improvements and mitigation strategies to maintain SIS system performance
Train Operations personnel on control-related improvements
Respond in a timely manner to plant and control system issues

Requirements

BS Degree in Chemical/Electrical/Control Systems Engineering/Computer Science or 5+ years in a related field
5+ years automation experience in a chemical/petrochemical industry (preferred)
5+ years leading DCS/SIS projects (DCS & PLC project experience is a plus)
Recent experience with regulatory and advanced process control methods
Knowledge of chemical manufacturing process control and field instrumentation
Knowledge of process control software such as Logmate and IP21
Willingness to attend training courses as required
Computer proficiency (Excel, Access, SQL, etc.)
Instrument and electrical knowledge and/or experience
Proven experience with modern DCS systems such as Emerson DeltaV SIS or Rockwell Aadvance SIS (experience with Emerson DeltaV or Yokogawa Centum VP is a plus)
Proven experience applying process historian tools such as IP21
Knowledge and experience with Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM)
Demonstrated high energy and execution focus
Demonstrated project management and facilitation skills
Self-starter with the ability to work with minimum supervision
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to work and lead in a team-oriented environment

Job Description

Sunbelt-Solomon Services is seeking a Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support a renewable energy mega-project based in Phoenix, AZ. This onsite role covers instrumentation, controls, automation, and industrial network engineering across a pumped storage hydro power generation facility, with design execution, technical review, and client-facing support, along with project management responsibilities.

As a senior technical leader, you will also help guide and mentor team members while tracking delivery performance through schedule, budget, risks, and commissioning support.

Role scope

Execute instrumentation, controls, automation, and industrial network engineering work for a pumped storage hydro power generation project, including design, technical review, client support, and leadership/mentoring.
Provide project management/support for approximately 20% of the time to support delivery through schedule, budget, and risk tracking, and commissioning support.

Key responsibilities

Provide technical expertise in instrumentation, controls, automation, industrial networks, and vendor package integration for utility and heavy industrial projects, including hydro and balance-of-plant applications.
Perform engineering design, technical review, client support, and leadership and mentoring of team members as required.
Design and review instrumentation and control systems for hydro, utility, and industrial balance-of-plant applications.
Develop control system architecture including PLC, remote I/O, HMI, SCADA, network, and vendor interface systems.
Develop and review industrial network architecture, communication interfaces, and integration requirements.
Design and review control panels, PLC panels, remote I/O panels, junction boxes, and related control system equipment.
Prepare and review control schematics, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, interconnection diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules, and termination drawings.
Prepare and review instrument indexes, I/O lists, instrument datasheets, installation details, and related design documentation.
Select and specify field instrumentation.
Develop and review control narratives, functional descriptions, sequences of operation, alarm requirements, permissives, interlocks, and shutdown logic.
Review PLC, HMI, and SCADA design requirements including operator interface layouts, alarms, trends, reports, and system functionality.
Integrate vendor-supplied equipment packages into the overall plant control system.
Review vendor drawings and documentation for compliance with project requirements, client standards, control philosophy, and constructability.
Prepare and review technical reports, design basis documents, specifications, calculations, construction packages, and engineering deliverables.
Apply applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices related to instrumentation, controls, industrial networks, control panels, electrical safety, and hydroelectric facilities.
Support proposal work including estimates, schedules, technical clarifications, and project execution plans.
Write, authenticate, and conduct final review of reports, drawings, specifications, calculations, and other deliverables prepared by others.
Ensure all project deliverables are completed to client satisfaction and in accordance with project requirements.
Assign staff responsibilities clearly across engineering, design, drafting, quality assurance, testing, and commissioning support.
Maintain communication and rapport with the client, project team, vendors, and construction/commissioning personnel.
Ensure safe work processes are followed and work is completed on time, within budget, and to required quality.
Track scope, schedule, budget, risks, changes, and technical issues throughout the project.
Support procurement, construction, commissioning, RFIs, field changes, deficiency resolution, and project closeout.
Complete project invoicing with accounting support and maintain acceptable profit margins on assigned projects.
Manage performance of project-assigned personnel through coaching, recognition, feedback, and performance management.
Mentor engineers, designers, programmers, technologists, and drafting staff in instrumentation, controls, automation, and network design practices.
Support development of standard designs, templates, tools, checklists, and lessons learned.
Act as a source of technical leadership and talent development for Magna and staff.
Support employee engagement practices to attract, develop, and retain strong technical talent.

Engineering & design focus (~80% time commitment)

Perform some or all instrumentation and controls engineering activities at a level suitable for engineering authentication.
Produce and review design deliverables such as control system architecture, panel layouts, schematics, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, interconnection drawings, cable schedules, termination drawings, instrument indexes, I/O lists, datasheets, and related documentation.
Create and review control narratives, functional descriptions, sequences of operation, alarms, permissives, interlocks, and shutdown logic.
Apply working knowledge of PLC, HMI, SCADA, remote I/O, historian, and industrial communication systems.
Support industrial network design activities including communication protocols and vendor package integration.

Minimum requirements

Professional Electrical Engineering or Professional Technologist degree required.
PE (Registered Professional Engineer) certification required.
Minimum 10 years experience in instrumentation, controls, and automation design.
Ability to perform electrical engineering design and studies independently and competently.
Valid drivers’ license and ability to travel within North America.
