Automation Engineer II
Job Description
The Automation Engineer II role at DSC Dredge centers on designing, developing, and managing automation projects while delivering engineering services across multiple departments. The position requires coordination with clients to ensure quality and compliance, and is based onsite in Reserve, Louisiana.
Responsibilities
- Manage multiple dredge projects and collaborate with Engineering disciplines, Production, Sales, and clients to drive deliverables.
- Act as the primary point of contact for several clients across various projects, ensuring high satisfaction and service quality.
- Support simultaneous engineering and company projects through effective multi-tasking and prioritization.
- Participate in initial sales efforts by helping design realistic project schedules and align them with execution capabilities.
- Coordinate with the Scheduler to keep project timelines updated throughout scope changes.
- Plan, evaluate, organize, and implement automation initiatives and related projects.
- Create circuit and layout drawings for control and power panels in accordance with NEC and corporate standards.
- Oversee programming and debugging of control software, including PLCs, HMIs, servo drives, and vision systems.
- Identify long-lead items and provide timely information and electrical drawings to support material orders and job documentation.
- Understand pneumatic and hydraulic drawings as required to meet specifications.
- Review drawings prior to release to Production to ensure alignment with electrical design and customer requirements.
- Ensure drawings enable efficient work by the electrical department and assist Production with equipment checks or troubleshooting as needed.
- Design and develop electrical components, equipment, and machinery; refine electrical parts and assembly drawings to capture design intent for manufacturing goals.
- Develop communication documentation to convey design concepts to clients or manufacturing partners.
- Maintain Bill of Materials for assigned projects and manage release packages and design history files.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement design changes on existing equipment as required.
- Manage client communications and maintain ongoing project requirements across multiple assignments.
- Review team design efforts to uphold quality standards; provide technical guidance to designers and drafters.
- Provide engineering services to departments such as Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Sales, and Field Services.
- Apply expertise to improve operational efficiency and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Foster a culture of creativity and leverage current technology within the Engineering team.
- Visit customer sites as needed to address engineering challenges and translate requirements into technical specifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Practical knowledge of current API standards for rotating equipment, with emphasis on centrifugal pumps, centrifugal compressors, and auxiliary systems.
- Proven collaborator who can leverage individual strengths to benefit the team.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Inventor; proficiency preferred.

Education and Experience
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation and Controls, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, along with approximately five years of hands-on engineering experience in a manufacturing environment. Hands-on experience with electrical systems is preferred.
