Job Description

Entry-level software engineering role within the NSA's Cybersecurity Engineering Development Program, with a focus on cryptographic software and hands-on lifecycle experience.

Responsibilities

  • The Cybersecurity Engineering Development Program (CSEDP) is a U.S. Government initiative to grow cybersecurity talent while building leadership and communication skills to meet cryptographic mission demands.
  • As an entry level track, participants receive extensive training and practical exposure to the full cryptographic development lifecycle, including design and development, key and code production, vulnerability discovery, and applying cryptography in operational environments.
  • Participants typically complete 3 to 4 rotations over a 3-year development window across Crypto Engineering areas: End Cryptographic Unit design/development, Crypto Key design/development, Crypto Assessment and Certification, and Crypto Application.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
  • Related fields may be considered if the program includes core CS coursework in algorithms, computer architecture (not network architecture), programming methodologies and languages, data structures, logic and computation, and advanced mathematics such as calculus and discrete mathematics.
  • Relevant experience must be in the software development lifecycle (requirements analysis, software design, implementation, testing, integration, deployment/installation, and maintenance) and programming.
  • Entry/Developmental entry is open to applicants with a Bachelor’s degree and no professional experience.
  • An Associate’s degree plus 2 years of related experience may be considered for individuals with depth in related work.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Salary Range: $87,362 - $123,388 for Entry/Developmental; exact amount varies by location, work level, and relevant experience.
  • Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day with a flexible window between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
  • DCIPS Trial Period: A two-year trial period applies if selected, or one year if you are veterans' preference eligible; the trial runs concurrently with employment.
  • Continued employment is subject to performance, agency needs, and alignment with public interests; notification is provided if certification for continued employment is not granted.
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required for all applicants.

Competencies

  • Strong background in advanced mathematics, including number theory, abstract algebra, linear algebra, probability, and discrete mathematics.
  • Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and computer architecture.
  • Proficiency in C/C++, Python, and Java.
  • Knowledge of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, including hash functions, encryption, digital signatures, and key exchange.
  • Familiarity with TLS/SSL and secure communications principles.
  • Understanding of hardware security modules (HSMs) and secure computing platforms in cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with SIEM, IDS, and vulnerability assessment tools.
  • Experience with cryptographic libraries, APIs, and adherence to security standards (NIST, ISO 27001, OWASP).
