Data Engineer 5

Build risk management data solutions with AI and help power experiences that support financial empowerment for millions of Americans. This onsite Data Engineer 5 role at Capital One focuses on designing and deploying cloud-first, proprietary risk tech capabilities, partnering with Agile teams, and leading large-scale initiatives from end to end.

What you’ll do

• Collaborate with Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across full-stack development tools and technologies
• Drive technical direction within the team by leveraging expertise in machine learning, distributed microservices, lakehouse architecture, and full-stack systems
• Use Python and Spark with open-source relational and NoSQL databases and cloud data warehousing platforms such as Databricks and Snowflake
• Independently design, build, and deliver world-class cloud data solutions and applications with little or no supervisor support
• Architect and enforce common data engineering design patterns to improve code quality, maintainability, and reuse across pipelines
• Design and build scalable, resilient data pipelines and platforms optimized for operational efficiency under growing data volume and business demand
• Serve as a data engineering ambassador by communicating technical concepts and data outcomes clearly to internal and external stakeholders
• Act as a force-multiplier through deep hands-on engineering contributions, innovation, and mentoring that elevates peers and junior engineers
• Lead end-to-end, large-scale data initiatives and make critical architectural decisions, including evaluating platform options such as Snowflake vs. Databricks based on technical and business requirements
• Collaborate with product managers and software engineers to deliver robust cloud-first data solutions
• Stay current with data trends by experimenting with new technologies, contributing to internal and external tech communities, and sharing knowledge

Required qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Engineering)
• At least 6 years of experience in application development (internship experience does not apply)
• At least 4 years of experience in distributed data
• At least 4 years with SQL
• At least 4 years programming with at least one of: Python, Java, or Scala
• At least 4 years designing and developing data pipelines
• At least 2 years in data modeling and designing end-to-end data solutions using both relational and non-relational database systems

Compensation

• McLean, VA: $229,900 - $262,400 per year for Data Engineer 5
• Richmond, VA: $209,000 - $238,500 per year for Data Engineer 5
• Eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI)
