Data Engineer, Radiology
Job Description
Join the Department of Radiology Research to help harmonize cancer imaging datasets into IDC-ready DICOM representations and advance imaging analysis software for large-scale research.
Responsibilities
- Harmonize contributed cancer imaging datasets (radiology, digital pathology, annotations, AI analysis results) into standard DICOM representation and prepare datasets for ingestion into IDC.
- Develop and maintain open source Python and C++ tools for IDC access and for converting between DICOM and research formats (including idc-index, highdicom, dcmqi, wsidicomizer, and related packages).
- Build and run cloud-based analysis workflows using Google Cloud, Terra, and JetStream2 to apply open source AI analysis tools to large imaging cohorts and encode outputs as DICOM.
- Develop and maintain agentic interfaces to IDC, applying agentic approaches to support the project and its users.
- Modernize 3D Slicer architecture by implementing modules against revised core libraries, reimplementing existing capabilities as reusable packages, and creating tests.
- Test and integrate components from collaborating institutions (DICOM validator, annotation infrastructure, DICOM standard tooling); report defects upstream.
- Create documentation and learning resources including tutorials, example notebooks, and webinar materials.
- Support users through the IDC forum.
- Participate in team meetings and track work in GitHub.
- Identify project needs, design, develop, and validate new software to meet those needs.
- Analyze and help fill computer hardware requirements associated with the required software development.
- Optimize software performance to align with clinical objectives.
- Write diagnostic software to test and ensure performance and accuracy of implemented solutions.
- Produce detailed analyses and diagrams as needed for manuscript preparation and grant submissions.
- Perform duties related to onboarding and maintaining workplace compliance/employability.

- Bachelor’s degree required (Computer Science highly preferred).
- Master’s degree in a related science or engineering field highly preferred.
- Experience in advanced MR image reconstruction software development is considered essential.
- Experience in advanced MR imaging reconstruction: > 2 years required.
- Experience in the medical field and patient care: > 1 year preferred.
- Proficiency in Python, Matlab, C++, and AI frameworks such as PyTorch.
- Proficiency in GPU and CPU multi-threaded programming.
- Proficiency with Linux, Windows, and Mac.
- Good knowledge and comfort with MR reconstruction and analysis packages including BART, XD-GRASP, SigPy, and FreeSurfer.
- Strong attention to detail and good communication skills, particularly for documentation.
