Job Description

Duke Health is hiring an Analytics Engineer to support Department of Pharmacy leadership with governed reporting, analytics, and decision support solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Pharmacy leadership and subject matter experts to understand business needs, prioritize work, and deliver solutions aligned to strategic and operational goals.
  • Provide stakeholder updates on progress, risks, dependencies, and opportunities.
  • Design, develop, validate, document, and maintain reporting and analytics solutions to deliver accurate, timely, and actionable information.
  • Build and maintain SQL queries, data transformations, and governed analytics assets supporting pharmacy operations, quality initiatives, and regulatory reporting.
  • Develop and maintain semantic modeling and analytics assets used for decision support.
  • Translate complex healthcare data and analytic findings into clear insights for frontline operational teams and senior executive leadership.
  • Support quality improvement, patient safety, medication stewardship, and operational excellence through analytical consultation and data-driven recommendations.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to improve data collection, reporting efficiency, data quality, and operational performance.
  • Follow analytics engineering best practices, including documentation, source control, peer review, testing, and deployment processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or four years of equivalent technical experience required.
  • Follow all policies and procedures set forth by DUHS/DHTS/ACE as they pertain to the role.
  • Basic understanding of core data platforms and structures related to the domain, including Clarity and Caboodle.
  • Basic understanding of analytics and BI technologies and terminology related to the role.
  • Ability to transform data into meaningful deliverables using analytics and BI tools.
  • Ability to translate business and technical requirements into deliverables such as data extracts and reports.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL query debugging.
  • Respond to customer requests for assistance as assigned and prioritized by the manager.
  • Maintain clear, timely, and accurate communication with the manager or business analyst regarding request status.
  • Maintain analytics engineering documentation and metadata as assigned (for example, GitLab artifacts or data dictionaries).
  • Participate in documentation, source control, peer review, testing, and deployment processes.
  • Demonstrate advanced domain understanding, including related data, workflows, tools, and semantic models (as applicable by level).
  • Work with stakeholders to understand business needs and perform business analysis independently (as applicable by level).
  • Translate business requirements into technical, data, and semantic model requirements independently (as applicable by level).
  • Write/modify accurate SQL queries independently (thresholds vary by level).
  • Basic knowledge of SQL query performance tuning (as applicable by level).
  • Can write complex SQL inclusion/exclusion criteria for cohort development (as applicable by level).
  • Mentor team members on SQL questions/tuning (as applicable by level).
  • Ability to locate data elements independently (as applicable by level).
  • Participate in peer review of SQL, data transformations, and semantic model design.
  • Actively participate in data quality assurance and submit requests for new or enhanced data structures, tables, and attributes.
  • Actively seek participation in special projects and accomplish assignments with minimal supervision (as applicable by level).
  • Manage multiple projects to completion in a timely manner (as applicable by level).
  • Develop and present topics as assigned by the customer and/or ACE team (as applicable by level).
  • Active participation in Duke Analytics Community or other applicable networking forums (as applicable by level).

  • Candidates should expect periodic onsite attendance to support collaboration, relationship building, requirements gathering, project work, and stakeholder engagement
  • Onsite frequency varies based on business needs, project activities, and customer engagement requirements

Education / Experience Notes by Level

  • Level 1: No experience beyond the minimum education (or equivalency) requirement.
  • Level 2: Two years of directly related experience required; prior experience with Microsoft Fabric, GitLab, and CI/CD practices preferred.
  • Level 3: Four years of directly related experience required; prior experience with Microsoft Fabric, GitLab, and CI/CD practices preferred.
  • Licensure / Certification: None required; preferred certification in analytics engineering technologies as appropriate for the position.
