Early to Mid-Career Piping Engineer
Job Description
BNH is hiring an early to mid-career Piping Engineer for the PHMS team to support mechanical integrity certification and maintenance of pressure vessels and piping systems at Arnold AFB, TN (onsite).
Responsibilities
- Perform field visits to inspect pressure vessels and piping systems, verifying, recording, and reporting data to determine equipment integrity and provide recommendations.
- Learn and execute engineering calculations and analyses including:
- ASME code calculations
- Pressure rating evaluations
- Piping flexibility and stress analysis
- Fitness for Service (FFS) assessments to verify code compliance with oversight from more experienced engineers
- Provide consultation on code compliance for pressurized systems with oversight from more experienced engineers.
- Support work across multiple ground test and plant facilities within the Arnold Engineering Development Complex.
- Assess mechanical integrity of process piping, pressure vessels, and system devices/components, including reviewing as-built system drawings and assisting with development and field checking of drawings as directed.
- Collect field data for mechanical integrity and piping assessments, including:
- nameplate stamping
- dimensions
- as-built configuration
- component and device information
- Reverse engineer existing systems and/or components using NDT data and engineering analysis.
- Conduct independent research, reviews, studies, and analyses supporting technical projects and programs.
- Maintain accountability for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of work, including configuration management and use of standard design criteria, practices, procedures, and codes when preparing plans and specifications.
- Produce technical reports documenting analysis, work performed, results, and recommendations.
- Recommend equipment, new concepts, and techniques to improve inspections, engineering evaluations, and reporting.
- Perform work in industrial environments including inside/outside tasks, confined spaces, and elevated areas.
- Wear company-issued PPE in accordance with company policy (condition of employment).
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- BS degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum 2 years of professional engineering experience, including experience with:
- process piping systems
- piping/mechanical integrity assessments
- industry piping codes such as ASME B31.3
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret level security clearance and access to the AEDC local area network.
- Due to Air Force security requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required for employment at AEDC.

Compensation
- USD 77,500 - 131,000 per year
Job Summary
- This posting is specifically for 2 to 7 years of post-degree engineering experience.
- Primary focus: engineering analysis, calculations, field inspection support, and consultation for process piping systems, pressure vessels, and existing facility infrastructure used in ground testing of air and space systems.
- Work includes applying ASME and American Petroleum Institute (API) codes and standards to support in-service inspections and mechanical integrity assessments.
- Role supports test readiness by helping ensure piping systems, pressure vessels, and related infrastructure are safe, reliable, and available to meet mission and customer requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Self-starter able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to learn and stay current on mechanical integrity information.
- Strong oral/written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with P&ID diagrams, process piping systems and components, industrial valves, regulators, and pressure relief devices.
- Knowledge or exposure to codes/standards including:
- ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII
- B31 codes
- API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1
- API 510 / 570
- ASME PCC-2 / NBIC
- Knowledge or exposure to certification of existing pressure vessels and piping systems, including design, fabrication, inspection, and testing.
- Knowledge or exposure to performing flexibility and stress analysis on ASME B31 process piping systems.
- Knowledge or exposure to NDE methods for identifying fabrication and service-induced defects, and to Fitness for Service assessment methods and implementation.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Active Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance.
- Familiarity with PV Elite, CAESAR II, Ansys, AutoCAD, MathCAD, and SagePlus.
