Experienced Piping Engineer

BNH is seeking an Experienced Piping Engineer to support the PHMS team with advanced engineering analysis, field inspection support, and technical consultation for process piping systems and pressure vessels. This onsite role backs U.S. Air Force test operations and focuses on applying ASME and API codes to help ensure mechanical integrity and in-service inspection readiness.

Role summary

You will contribute to mechanical integrity assessments for pressurized systems by performing field data collection, conducting code-based engineering calculations, and supporting documentation and recommendations. Work may span multiple ground test and plant facilities across the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) in Arnold AFB, TN.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field visits to inspect pressure vessels and piping systems, verify conditions, record findings, and report information used to determine equipment integrity and make recommendations.
• Perform calculations and analyses, including ASME code calculations, pressure rating evaluations, piping flexibility and stress analysis, and Fitness for Service assessments to confirm compliance to code.
• Provide consultation related to code compliance for pressurized systems.
• Assess mechanical integrity of process piping, pressure vessels, system devices and components, including reviewing as-built system drawings and supporting development and field checking of drawings for each system.
• Collect relevant field data such as name plate stamping, dimensions, as-built configuration, and component/device information for mechanical integrity and piping assessments.
• Reverse engineer existing systems and/or components using non-destructive test (NDT) data and engineering analysis.
• Carry out independent research, reviews, studies, and analyses supporting technical projects and programs.
• Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of work, including proper configuration management and use of standard design criteria, practices, procedures, and codes in plans and specifications.
• Produce technical reports documenting analysis, work performed, results, and recommendations.
• Recommend equipment, new concepts, and techniques to improve inspections, engineering evaluations, and reporting.
• Provide technical guidance to less-experienced engineers and coordinate with inspection, operations, safety, and drafting personnel.
• Work in industrial environments including inside/outside locations, confined spaces, and elevations.
• Wear company-issued PPE per company policy.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

• BS in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university plus a minimum of 8 years of post-degree engineering experience that includes process piping systems, code compliance, and piping/mechanical integrity assessments.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret level security clearance and access to the AEDC local area network.
• Due to Air Force Security requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required for employment at AEDC.

Compensation and location

• Location: Arnold AFB, TN (onsite)
• Salary: USD 115,000 - 183,500 per year

Preferred qualifications

• Self-starter with a can-do attitude and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Knowledge or experience implementing mechanical integrity programs.
• Willingness to learn and stay current on mechanical integrity information.
• Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with P&ID diagrams, process piping systems and components, industrial valves, regulators, and pressure relief devices.
• Ability to identify devices and their schematic symbols, drawing methodology, and formats.
• Knowledge or experience with implementation of codes/standards including: ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII; B31 Codes; API 579-1/ASME FFS-1; API 510/570; API 580/581; and ASME PCC-2/NBIC.
• Knowledge or experience certifying existing pressure vessels and piping systems, including design, fabrication, inspection, and testing.
• Knowledge or experience performing flexibility and stress analysis on ASME B31 process piping systems.
• Knowledge or application of NDE methods for identifying fabrication and service-induced defects, along with Fitness for Service assessment methods and implementation.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Active Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance.
• Familiarity with PV Elite, CAESAR II, Ansys, AutoCAD, MathCAD, and SagePlus software.

Experience note: This position is specifically for candidates with 8 to 12 years of post-degree engineering experience.
