Fire Protection Engineer

The Fire Protection Engineer designs and documents fire protection systems for new buildings, including sprinklers, standpipes, pumps, water tanks, and special hazards, adhering to NFPA standards. The role requires collaboration with contractors, authorities having jurisdiction, and other engineers, along with hydraulic and seismic calculations and the preparation of technical drawings and written documentation.

Responsibilities

• Design fire sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump, water tanks, and special hazard suppression and extinguishing systems for new buildings of varying types.
• Provide NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 sprinkler system design; NFPA 14 standpipe design; and NFPA 20 fire pump system design.
• Prepare drawings for AHJ submittal and map field installation.
• Perform hydraulic calculations and prepare calculations for review by others.
• Provide seismic calculations including zone of influence analysis in accordance with NFPA 13.
• Prepare hlf listing files for complete system fabrication, including loose items listing.
• Familiarity with FM design standards.
• Conduct fire-flow testing.
• Engage in daily technical writing across multiple formats.
• Operate as a collaborative team member, contributing to a cohesive design effort.
• Work under the supervision of fire protection engineers and designers, preparing plans and files for review.
• Recognize the importance of completing work on time and within budget.
• Develop clear and concise written documentation.
• Be punctual and available for occasional paid overtime as required.
• Balance multiple projects concurrently.

Requirements

• A mechanical engineering degree from an ABET-accredited university is required.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with building owners and architects, as well as coordinate with other consulting disciplines such as electrical, structural, and civil engineers.
