Forensic Mechanical Engineer

Responsibilities

• Investigate the cause and origin of failures, damages, or defects in mechanical systems and components across industrial, commercial, and residential sites.
• Analyze failure events, determine causes, evaluate construction quality, and review design and maintenance procedures.
• Conduct field investigations, lead multi-party examinations, and document damaged property.
• Research failure modes, code requirements, and provide recommendations for repair or replacement as needed.
• Prepare accurate, clear, thorough client reports detailing opinions and conclusions.
• Participate in multidisciplinary teams on large and complex assignments.
• Maintain established relationships with current clients and consultants.
• Stay current with company policies and participate in ongoing training to ensure knowledge remains comprehensive.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and 3 to 5 years of mechanical engineering experience within insurance or legal forensics.
• Residency in the Midwest region of the United States is required.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the resident state.
• Willingness to participate in expert witness activities and provide court testimony.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal abilities.
• Proficiency with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• A drive to learn, excel, and grow within the profession.
• Flexible to travel and able to accommodate approximately 30–50% travel.
