Job Description

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP is seeking an experienced Highway Engineer to support transportation delivery within the Baltimore Highway Group. This onsite, mid-level role focuses on leading highway and multimodal design efforts while coordinating schedules, budgets, and client communications across Mid-Atlantic and national projects.

Role Overview

In this position, you will provide technical leadership and project management for roadway and transportation assignments. You will collaborate with internal teams and serve as a primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders, while supporting proposal development and client presentations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of highway and transportation projects, including roadway alignments, geometric design, and roadside safety
  • Lead the design and development of multi-modal facilities, including pedestrian, bicycle, and transit components
  • Lead the development of maintenance of traffic and construction staging plans
  • Prepare and review construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports
  • Ensure project work complies with AASHTO, FHWA, and state DOT standards
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers
  • Act as a primary liaison for clients and stakeholders
  • Support business development through proposal preparation and client presentations

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Must be certified as a Professional Engineer in Maryland or able to obtain certification within 6 months through comity from another state
  • 11-15 years of relevant job experience related to highway engineering
  • Experience designing and managing highway tasks and projects, including preparation of contract documents
  • Knowledge of AASHTO, FHWA, and other relevant highway design guidelines, criteria, and standards; knowledge of MDOT SHA guidelines, criteria, and standards preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, handle multiple assignments, and maintain a cooperative approach

Preferred Tools and Technologies

  • Design software experience including MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, and AutoCAD

Work Location and Scheduling

  • Location: Baltimore, MD (onsite)
  • Position Level: Mid-Level

Compensation

The expected annual compensation range for this position is USD 75,000 - 155,000.
