Job Description
The HVAC Controls System Engineer at Johnson Controls in Houston, TX, will design, configure, and operate integrated building control systems, including fire, security, and other low-voltage subsystems. The role encompasses software development, system commissioning, and clear communication of design and operation to clients and field teams.

Compensation
Salary: USD 85,000 - 115,000 per year
Responsibilities
- Designs and configures full building automation systems, incorporating fire, security, lighting, nurse call, data networks and other low-voltage subsystems to fulfill project requirements.
- Leads quality, timeliness, and efficiency of designs in collaboration with field teams.
- Develops advanced software, conducts system commissioning, and resolves operational issues to ensure reliable performance.
- Generates detailed submittals and communications for customers, consultants, field installation teams, and subcontractors.
- Shapes technically sophisticated control configurations as defined by contract documents.
- Produces flow diagrams, sequences of operations, bill of materials, network layouts, and electrical schematics as needed.
- Develops and tests software essential for system operation according to project intent.
- Coordinates creation of drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and installation.
- Oversees material selection, ordering, and delivery for assigned projects.
- Coordinates factory-mounting activities to align with factory and project schedules.
- Assists in loading and commissioning of all system and network-level controllers as required.
- Supports validation of full system functionality and collaborates with subcontractors and other trades to ensure proper operation.
- Provides field change information for as-built drawings and software updates.
- Keeps management and customers informed of job progress and issues.
- Assists in site-specific owner/operator training on the total building control system.
- Participates in release meetings with the project field team.
- Applies value engineering to achieve cost effective results while maintaining customer satisfaction.
- Adheres to safety standards and maintains a strong safety culture for employees and subcontractors.
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of experience with an Engineering Degree, or an Associate degree in a related technical field with seven years of relevant work experience required.
- Proven knowledge of HVAC controls systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with at least five years of experience, or an associate degree in a related technical field with five years of relevant work experience required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems and other building subsystems.
- Proven experience integrating low voltage building sub-systems using industry protocols such as LON and BacNet, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
- Strong computer skills, particularly with drafting tools and related software.
