I&C Engineer (Level III or Senior Level)
Job Description
Duke Energy’s PMC group is seeking an I&C Engineer (Engineer III or Senior Engineer) to deliver technical management across control system and instrumentation/controls workstreams from project planning through execution. This hybrid role in Charlotte, North Carolina supports technical leadership for a matrixed team.
Role Overview
As an I&C Engineer in PMC, you will provide oversight and direction for DCS-related scope, including control system purchase, design, commissioning support, and technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle. Your work includes leading factory acceptance testing activities and providing engineering guidance for site controls and cyber security assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Support development of major project scope and EPC bid package.
- Coordinate with Transmission on interconnection design and ensure contract documentation aligns with interconnection scope.
- Support cost estimate, schedule, risk analysis, bid evaluation, and contract development.
- Provide engineering oversight to ensure compliance with project requirements, contract terms, and design criteria.
- Participate in design reviews and drawing reviews; provide construction support and help resolve technical RFIs.
- Support commissioning and project warranty activities.
- Specify and procure Emerson DCS equipment.
- Develop and review control logic and graphics.
- Lead hardware and software factory acceptance testing.
- Provide oversight for construction and programming of site controls and cyber security assets.
- Apply working knowledge of Cyber Security and NERC CIP regulations.
- Maintain compliance with applicable industry standards including ISA, IEEE, NFPA, NERC, and related requirements.
- Provide on-site engineering support during construction and commissioning.
- Deliver engineering/technical expertise to identify, analyze, and resolve problems with increasing scope and complexity, including issues both within and outside typical responsibility.
- Assist in achieving business goals through planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
- Prepare thorough technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches for defined problems and analyses.
- Conduct engineering and related studies; complete non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight and independently manage project schedules and interfaces as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or a PE.
- Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.
- A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
- Minimum 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Strong working knowledge of Emerson Ovation control system and Allen-Bradley PLCs.
- Comprehensive knowledge of fundamental engineering theories and principles.
- Knowledge of researching engineering and design issues, assessing options, and making effective recommendations and presentations.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam and desire to complete PE license.

Work Location & Schedule
Location: Charlotte, NC (hybrid). Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
