Job Description

Capital One is building responsible, reliable AI systems that help power AI-powered products for associates and customers. As a Lead AI Engineer (MLX), you will help advance foundation model and LLM capabilities, spanning training, inference, evaluation, guardrails, and observability, while working on scalable, high-performance AI infrastructure.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with a cross-functional group of engineers, research scientists, technical program managers, and product managers to deliver AI-powered products that improve how associates work and how customers engage with Capital One.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, guardrails, model evaluation, experimentation, governance, and observability.
  • Build and apply Open Source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, PyTorch, and related tools.
  • Develop and introduce state-of-the-art LLM optimization techniques to improve production performance across scalability, cost, latency, and throughput.
  • Help shape the technical vision and long-term roadmap for foundational AI systems within the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) organization.

Skills and experience needed

  • Education + experience: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field with at least 4 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or a Master’s degree in a related field with at least 2 years of experience.
  • Programming: At least 4 years programming with Python, Go, Scala, or Java.

Helpful technologies

Experience with AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, PyTorch, and related cloud and software stacks is relevant. The role may involve AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, C++, C#, and Golang.

Role details

  • Location: New York, NY (onsite)
  • Salary: USD 215,200 - 245,600 per year
  • Experience requirement: 4 years minimum
