Lead Engineer - Civil
Job Description
Avangrid is seeking a Lead Civil Engineer for Networks to lead high-voltage, medium-voltage, and low-voltage transmission and distribution substation design work across NYSEG and RGE service territories. The role partners with construction and design teams to advance engineering deliverables from concept through execution, reports to the Unit Manager, and operates within a cross-functional project team.

Role Summary
Lead Civil Engineer - Networks responsible for transmission and distribution substation designs and for supporting concrete and steel designs on transmission and distribution line projects. Provides technical leadership across complex projects with broad departmental impact, including engineering studies, design compliance, and coordination with internal teams, external detailed designers, and contractors.
Responsibilities
- Lead capital project engineering performance across all phases, including scoping and budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management and design, engineering design, construction, and closeout.
- Lead and create new conceptual designs and oversee external detailed designer work.
- Conduct field circuit reviews based on project scope and identify proposed improvements.
- Identify and execute special projects and studies to address unique and complex problems with broad business impact.
- Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve technical challenges and improve processes or services.
- Solve unique and complex engineering problems by identifying innovative solutions.
- Oversee engineering studies evaluating equipment and system performance and effectiveness, and analyze operational issues to support system reliability and operational efficiency.
- Develop and validate information required for engineering analyses and apply engineering judgment to address technical problems.
- Ensure engineering designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards.
- Represent the company on regional and national committees when needed.
- Utilize technical knowledge to influence and guide department engineers.
- Provide technical leadership in complex projects with wide departmental impact.
- Mentor, develop, and support the team in technical skills.
- Collaborate across departments as a technical subject matter expert liaison while directing contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or electrical engineering and 7+ years of experience in projects delivery or another related field.
- Relevant network construction and operational experience, including field inspections.
- Theoretical engineering knowledge including planning, operations, and engineering design, with analytic/modeling and calculation experience; understanding the business model and cross-functional collaboration.
- Practical engineering experience and application including planning, operations, and engineering design and construction; experience with field work, standardization, economic analyses of engineering alternatives, and developing business cases for stakeholders.
- Ability to document and interpret engineering documentation.
- Ability to review and approve engineering work performed by others to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
- Knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment, including local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements.

- Awareness and understanding of key business drivers.
- Ability to devise solutions to both common and complex problems or challenges.
- Where appropriate, technical and operational experience in a relevant engineering role within a utility environment.
- Knowledge of engineering standards and specifications up to 345kV.
