Job Description

Hybrid role in Boston at John Hancock Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.) building production-ready machine learning and data platforms. This position focuses on scalable data pipelines, backend services and microservices, and end-to-end ML workflows used in underwriting and analytics. Eligible employees may also participate in incentive programs tied to business and individual performance.

What you’ll do

  • Develop, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines that support underwriting, analytics, and machine learning systems
  • Create and deploy backend services and microservices for data ingestion, data retrieval, and ML inference workflows
  • Deploy, monitor, and maintain production machine learning pipelines and the supporting backend services
  • Perform root-cause analysis for issues across data, models, and pipelines, then implement corrective solutions
  • Collaborate with data scientists, underwriters, and engineering teams to turn business requirements into technical solutions
  • Support production releases and large-scale batch processing of underwriting workflows

Required qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Data Science, Information Studies, Information Science, Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a closely related field, plus 3 years of Python programming for backend systems, automation, or machine learning workloads
  • 3 years using SQL or NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL or MongoDB, for data modeling, querying, or pipeline integration
  • 3 years developing or deploying machine learning models using PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • 3 years building or maintaining backend APIs or microservices using FastAPI or Flask
  • 2 years deploying ML workflows or backend services using AWS or Azure
  • 2 years with containerization and orchestration, including Docker and Kubernetes
  • 2 years using GitHub Actions or TeamCity for CI/CD
  • 2 years designing distributed or scalable systems, including microservices, load balancing, or distributed processing

Hybrid work arrangement

Work is hybrid from the Boston office: 3 days in the office and 2 days at home.

Compensation

$90,160 to $167,440 per year (salary range). Salary listed for this posting: $162,198 per year.
