Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
Henneman Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support MEP design and consulting projects from early planning through construction support in its Champaign, Illinois office. This onsite role includes primarily local travel for meetings and field engineering needs.
Role Summary
The position provides full project lifecycle mechanical, process, and plumbing design support, along with field engineering responsibilities. Work includes coordination across disciplines and development of design deliverables for consulting and construction documentation.
Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical engineering tasks across project development, including client coordination, pre-design services, final design services, meetings, site visits, and project management.
- Complete existing conditions surveys and prepare PFDs, P&IDs, layouts, sections, elevations, and details to document relevant conditions.
- Develop the initial process, mechanical, and plumbing design approach, with engineering and design responsibility for process, mechanical, and plumbing systems and applicable code requirements.
- Coordinate design and scheduling with architectural, structural, electrical, and controls disciplines to resolve complex issues, including conflicting requirements and coordination challenges.
- Produce process, mechanical, and plumbing construction drawings, technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates.
- Create engineering solutions including cost estimates, bills of materials, and project schedules.
- Apply relevant codes and standards for mechanical, piping, and plumbing systems.
- Support contract bidding by preparing and issuing responses to contractor requests for information, and preparing and issuing bulletin and change order documentation.
- Provide field engineering and construction services, including shop drawing review and on-site observation.
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (4-year program).
- 5-10+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer in an MEP design and consulting firm.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to work directly with clients and internal engineering teams.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to client sites as needed (primarily local and regional travel).

Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain professional licensure.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and HVAC design.
- Project management experience, including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, and client communication.
Location and Work Schedule
Champaign, IL | Onsite. This is a Full-Time position with primarily local travel and minimal overnight expectations.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: USD 80,000 - 110,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
