Job Description

The City of Norfolk seeks a Network Engineer III in its Cybersecurity Bureau to design, implement, and maintain secure, scalable network and security infrastructure with emphasis on network defense and Microsoft 365 security.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and troubleshoot advanced cybersecurity and networking problems.
  • Investigate web-based threats, remediate malware infections, and respond to intrusion attempts.
  • Use analytical judgment to balance user needs, operational realities, and technical limits.
  • Plan, specify, and deploy new cybersecurity hardware, software, and services.
  • Oversee and maintain firewalls, IPS, web filtering, email protection, and EDR solutions.
  • Continuously monitor, analyze, and optimize security infrastructure for performance, reliability, and compliance.
  • Work with cross-departmental teams to deliver secure and scalable technology solutions.
  • Provide security guidance across technology initiatives from planning through deployment and support.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Prepare precise documentation, memos, reports, and user manuals.
  • Provide responsive customer service to City agencies and staff with timely support.
  • Keep technical documentation and automated work management systems up to date.
  • Perform additional cybersecurity tasks as directed by the Chief Information Security Officer.

Supplemental Information

  • Location: 800 E. City Hall Ave, 1st Floor, Norfolk, VA 23510; Remote Work Eligible
  • Salary: USD 79,982 - 133,999 per year
  • Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM; forty hours per week to align with City operating hours
  • Essential position: Requires attendance during emergencies, delayed city openings, and special weather events
  • Reporting to: Chief Information Security Officer
