Oracle Database Administrator (Data Engineer)
Job Description
Navy Federal Credit Union is hiring an Oracle Database Administrator (Data Engineer) to research, design, implement, and maintain Oracle database solutions that support availability, recovery, security, automation, monitoring, and day-to-day production support. This onsite role in the Vienna, VA area includes a rotating 24/7 DBA on-call responsibility and participation in major incident response when critical database alerts or escalations occur.
Role Summary
The position focuses on building and operating Oracle database environments while applying engineering principles to design and enhancements for new and existing systems. Responsibilities span Oracle RAC administration on AIX, enterprise operations using Oracle tooling, OCI database support, and the engineering of high availability and disaster recovery capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer Oracle RAC databases on AIX (IBM AIX operating systems), including installation, setup, configuration, performance tuning, and operational support for high availability Oracle Real Applications Clusters (RAC)
- Provision, migrate, optimize, and support enterprise Oracle databases on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
- Implement advanced security controls, including enforcing TLS 1.2 encryption for client-to-database and server communication
- Perform quarterly Critical Patch Updates across database environments using Oracle Fleet Maintenance tools and OEM automation
- Build, maintain, and test Oracle Data Guard physical standby setups to support high availability, zero data loss, and swift failovers
- Automate routine database management using Ansible and Shell scripting, including provisioning, backup monitoring, and health checks
- Use OEM for proactive monitoring, diagnostics, and performance management
- Handle IT service management activities using ServiceNow, including incident and change ticket management and root cause analysis; respond promptly to 24/7 on-call notifications for participation in major incident bridges or critical database alerts
- Apply engineering principles to the design and enhancement of existing and new systems
- Document new system components or modifications to existing components
- Ensure the security and integrity of solutions in alignment with Navy Federal, industry engineering, and Information Security principles and practices
- Support business needs through engineering tasks and assignments
- Conduct research, evaluate, procure, deploy, and configure engineering technologies for new and modified systems
- Provide technical leadership in architecture discipline and development of information technology solutions
- Present clear, organized, and concise information to varied audiences to support effective business decisions
- Perform Oracle database installation, upgrades, and migrations for RAC environments
- Lead performance tuning for production Oracle databases
- Design and implement high availability solutions using Oracle RAC and Oracle Data Guard
- Apply Oracle quarterly security patch releases to maintain security compliance
- Participate in the 24/7 on-call DBA rotation supporting the production environment for the Oracle DB Team
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- 2-5 years of Oracle Database Administrator experience, including a proven track record with Oracle RAC administration on AIX
- Hands-on OCI experience creating and supporting database deployments (or similar)
- Experience implementing and supporting Oracle Multi-tenant Architecture databases
- Advanced automation scripting experience
- Significant experience with Oracle EM and Oracle Fleet Maintenance
- Advanced knowledge of the engineering discipline
- Advanced organizational, planning, and time management skills
- Advanced ability to exercise initiative and use good judgment to make sound decisions
- Database and presentation software skills
- Research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Expert verbal and written communication skills
- Word processing and spreadsheet software skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Information Technology, or the equivalent combination of training, education, and experience

Schedule and Location
- Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM (rotating on-call schedule required)

Compensation and Protections
- Salary: USD 78,400 - 123,200 per yearly (paid within the range based on experience, location, and market position)
